Need help deciding on an engine for the turbo project...
Well, i have decided to not go the 383 route because of the rpm limit and the rod-stroke ratio. Also, a 6.0 rod with a 383=expensive pistons. So i have decided on either a 406 or a 377. Now just to let you know, i am getting a bow tie block pretty cheap so boring and that stuff isn't a problem. I have it narrowed down to three choices:
- 406 with either 5.7 or 6.0 rods
- 377 using a destroked 400 block
- 377 using a big bore/350 block combo
Could someone tell me the benefits of each. To let you know i am looking for nine's, period. And a maximum redline of 7000 with peak power around 6500. Thanks for all your help.

I would use a 355 but if you already have the bowtie block go with it. Give speedway a call and talk to bill he can probabily give you the best advice on what engine to use. I assume this is a street car. I'am going with the 355 because its easy and cheap for me and will make power to put me in the 9s with ease.

Well, I have done lots of research and one thing I learned is that the long rod is always better.
377 are super for revving but if you want to see 7k as your limit, than a 406 is going to suit you fine. youll have more torque in the range you want to be making power. As far as starting earlier as compared to a 377. Of course the 377 will wrap up quick Im sure.
These are my opinions and why I ended up with a 406 instead of a 377.
Im sure others will have different input. Im far from being an expert engine builder but know enough to be dangerous.

i'll let everyone know how my TT 358ci turns out--i should be firing it up this weekend or next. i've just got some last minute fittings/connections to get. previously it was a twin turbo 350ci but with stock TPI intake, mild 440/465 lift cam, stock replacement heads with big valves. it made 465 rwhp in this configuration with no intercooler and on 93 octane. shooting for 550+ rwhp this time around with a miniram intake, DFI w/ variable injector controller, custom grind cam, Dart Sportsman II heads and other goodies. as soon as i figure out how to do the intercooler, i can get a 3 bar map sensor and crank the boost up a little higher for some serious power...

I think i am going to give Bill a call at Speedway. In his 8 second street vette, he used all bow tie stuff, except for rods/crank, and made a very fast motor. this would be great for me since i can get mass discount on GM Performance parts. i'll keep everyone posted on what i am doing. Just to give a rough estimate, this car wont be done for about 2-3 year.
