NEED HELP FAST on paxton!!!!!

ok guy i came across a 91 GTA and i asked the guy if he wanted to sell it. he says yes. But the thing i am worried about is that it has a paxton supercharger, The body and interior is in good shape and it has a 305, but the reason that i would buy it is that it has a supercharger. But i have only heard bad things about paxton. should i pass on this car? i have heard that they only last 10,000- 15,000 miles, is this true? it seems to run and drive great. I am going to get it checked out by a very very qualified mechanic and long time drag racer. so let me know if i should pass or buy.
thanks
Tom

To keep this short. I was going to buy a paxton. I called them to talk with them about sending it in for a check up. they did not seem overly helpfull & did not want to really talk with me about this "obsolete" blower. So, i did not buy it nor did i give them any business. they did not even want to take it back for a check up, & charge me money for inspecting it. If they dont want my money i will find someone that does.

I dont know if that is how they treat everyone but i was not overly impressed.

The paxton on my car is 10 years old now I believe. It has never been rebuilt and has 80,000 miles on it. It's went in for yearly inspection every year. The ONLY thing it ever required was changing the seals. Which was done 500miles ago.

It's rolling the dice. I am prepared to have it rebuilt whenever it does take a dump. I definitely wouldn't go as far as calling it "obselete".

I too have a paxton s/c. I do aggree with the first statement! Paxton's customer service is really poor and i think that they should take the management to Nordstroms for a day of customer education! However, i also agree with wootan too. I only have put 7K miles on my 3rd gen in the last 2 yrs and have had no problem with my s/c. Except for the cold water injection unit that went out. Paxton wanted $175 for a new unit? I went to shucks, purchase a windshiled washer pump for 10 bucks....works great! I think the key to longevity of the supercharger is that you must change the oil every 3mo. or 3K miles which ever comes first. And not spining the supercharger over 38000 rpms ( which is about 5200 rpms ). My paxton produces 8.5lbs of boost although paxton swears that it will only produce 7 max? I wish i would have purchased an ati!!!!!!!! But the paxton has been very good to me.

please dont get me wrong, there are a ton of Paxtons out there & i am sure that they last just as long as the rest of the blowers out there, but they ought to invest as much time in CS as they do advertising (or close to it).

Ok guys i am seeing both sides of the story here and i appreciate you input. The most important question is would you guys pass on the car just because it already has a Paxton installed? The car is in great shape (body, interior, engine) he is asking $5,000. i think it is a fair price (i'll try to go lower) especially with the super charger. i am kind of hoping that you guys think i should buy it, but if you see serious problems with this purchase, please let me know.
thanks

Ok guys, now I am worried about buying this car. Someone e-mailed me and told me that a friend of his had a paxton on a 305 and only made it run as fast as a stock Z28 (with a 350). Is seems like it should add more than one second to the 1/4 time. Would he be running real low boost?

Also what is a safe amount of boost to run with a stock engine (besides headers and exhaust) for a daily driver?

Thanks
Tom

I don't know how true it is(i run juice) but i heard that the paxton can only rev up to about 4880 rpms(engine) and then they spin their bearings!! I heard that the super alone will spin to 35k while ati and vortech will exceed 65k. This is why i probley wouldn;t go for a pax. You will always get people who it will work for and those who it won't. What u have to decide what side your luck is on, who u believe(some people give out wrong info) and if you can afford to be wrong.
Good luck w/your decision
Derrick

Man I have to get in on this. I put a Paxton SN93 unit on my show truck www.bharris.org/92GMC and changed the oil religously at 3k or less and it blewup about once a year at about 10k miles. I never pushed it above 5k rpms. I even had an oil cooler on it once until it blew up and melted down the external pump on the way to a show . Blew burn trans fluid all over the hood. As far as performance gains. You only get boost from about 2500 up. No bottom end power at all. I sold my last Paxton unit (since they covered every other one under warranty) off and I have been in the process of building my 350 5 speed to achieve the same horsepower but with a much better power curve. Just blowing off a little steam. I wouldn't have another paxton if you give it too me.
