Want to put Turbo on my GTA

I am buying a 5 speed GTA with the plan of putting a Turbo on it with the hopes of breaking in to the 10's ... eventually. I hope to have this done in 1.5-2.5 years. I'm not rich, so I want to spend reasonably...

Question is engine. Goals are to keep fuel injection. I'm not a motor rebuilder. Hoping I could buy a crate motor such as a ZZ4, change cam and heads to accomodate the turbo. Would this be a good direction to head? Or would I need to spend more money on a custom made motor?

A tremec 5 speed, and Ford 9" would back this up...

First of all realize the huge expense what you're talking about involves. You can count on spending at least 3 grand on a turbo setup, plus 3-5 on the motor, plus *** knows what on incidentals.

If thats out of your range, look elsewhere.

If not, good luck to you..turbos rock

I said 10's ... not 13s.

I realize that costs money...but prefer it be cheaper than buying a used Viper.

forget that tranny...a tremec won't get you into the 10's. Plus have a fun time keeping boost while shifting...better of going automatic...but then again thats just my opinion...to be honest you are probably better off building a motor from scratch...or not even building it yourself...but start from scratch...you can buy what you want and need...crate motors are good but if u are gonna get it then swap things out it kinda defeats the purpose.

I was thinking about turboing my L98 but i'm going with a GN/TTA turbo 3.8 instead

If a Tremec won't do it, then a Jericho will.

Buying a crate motor and swapping heads and cam doesn't defeat the purpose...nor does buying a short block and adding on...

I want a V8 turbo with a manual. Not interested in the Buick/TTA idea...

Would building a motor, or the motor setup, have the same concept wether you were to put a supercharger or turbo on it??

There are plenty of supercharged TPI motors around running great times in quarter mile...wouldn't that same motor work just as well, if not better, with a turbo??

A forced induction engine will have the same bottom end, regardless of whether its turbo or supercharger. Where it starts to differ is head design, often mimizing exhaust port size to keep velocity high and temps hot for the turbos, compared to superchargers. The cam would naturally be different as well, since turbos will have much more exhaust backpressure.

Don't bother with a crate engine - you'll need to tear it apart and replace the pistons to lower compression anyways...

Yup,definatly better building the motor from scratch to the specs you will need. There are plenty of people out there(and on here)that can point you in the right direction.

On a side note,if you want to run 10's your better off with an automatic. And if your funds are limited, your really better off with the V6 Turbo.Just wanted to mention it even though you've already stated thats not your goal.

Nothing wrong with a Tremec. Call Forte's Parts Connection. My neighbor's 1993 LX 5.0 has run 9.80's with a 331" engine, T-trim Vortech, and a Tremec TKO. He uses a Ram single-disk clutch and drives it everywhere...

I have, and still am, seriously considering buying a TTA. But a few things keep me from getting one: I live in Destin Fl and drive near or by the beach, and live close to it. I wouldn't want to buy one and have it turn into a rust bucket. On a regular GTA it wouldn't bother me so bad. My L98-auto is already rusting in some spots. Another thing is I want a manual pretty bad. The TTA is also white, and my wife would approve the buy of a red GTA. I mentioned to her I could paint the car red (which would be sacreligious). And I sure would miss that rumble of the V8 exhaust.
I could also buy the 5 speed straight up, and gradually spend money on it making it what I want it. If I bought the TTA, I would want a low mileage one, which I would have to finance.

I'll never understand what people here have against sticks with boost...like every fast turbo import in the world just about isn't a stick.

They work just fine, and a tremec should be plenty good for 10's.
