Project: "Street Lethal", Let's Try This Again....

After repeated purchases, followed by unfortunate sales, I finally have the majority of the pieces needed to get this '86 Z28 project in nine second form, hopefully by the end of March. Got my hands on a complete TPI setup from an '86 F-Body, as well as a complete MegaSquirt ECM system. First things first is to pull the carb and convert the engine to fuel injection, and I'll be updating this thread w/pics along the way. Going to be retaining the worked 882 heads, mainly for the desired compression ratio, although they too will be pulled for some additional clean up work. To start of this thread, I'll be working on the TPI system itself. I already pulled out the vacuum ports found on the throttle body, and will be sealing them up with some epoxy. The other three vacuum ports found on the plenum will remain of course, but there will be plenty of port work to follow. For now, here is the basic setup....

Re: Project: "Street Lethal", Let's Try This Again....

I left off a few months back w/pulling out the entire AC setup, while making room for turbo charger. Here is a before and after w/the G20 delete box I eventually went with. All of the unnecessary wiring harness was removed, and those that were retained were shortened for a nice clean look. I'll have more recent pictures up tomorrow....

.... this was just a baseline of what I am currently working with, Click Here, the car now employs an almost complete beige 4th gen interior, and is currently being prepped for Blue Metallic paint. Waiting on a set of 16" Iroc rims, which of course will be fitted with the right rubber;

Yeah, I finally got my hands on a complete unit. I'm porting out the entire TPI setup first, and I'm still waiting for some of the epoxy to dry. I still have that set of LT1 injectors, just going to have them cleaned for now, but will be upgrading once the turbo is plumbed in. Let me know how much your uncle will charge me for a cage....

Good deal on the cage. Was curious to see what it looked like, so I pulled out all three of the vacuum ports, along with the two coolant ports, for a nice clean look. I'm sure the epoxy will hold, but worst case scenario, you could always weld them up later on. The heads will be pulled very soon, if you do it, take your time with them, no rush. Also have a set of BMR SFC's that will need to be welded in....

u should ditch those bmr's for a fraction of the cost we could do threw the floor sfc's that will work better
u need those coolant ports. if u block them u cannot run a thermostat. they bypass coolant form one side of the thermo to the other when its closed

Man you sould like me. Get parts, change mind , get rid of em for different parts.
Ive got everything laying around to finish up my turbo motor except for the Turbo and a good waste gate.

Deff. post up some pic's when you start on your headers etc.
Im gonna stick with this kit I have right here and run a S400 if it will fit over there.

the 14.7 that his car ran was on the carb
its way to small for the motor only a 600cfm carb and it ran that on the primarys only, the rear fuel bowl was bone dry due to a float that was stuck

the 406 with those ported heads should go into the 13's even with only 8-1 cr that the motor has

Sounds like you guys have quite a bit of experience with hopping up cars. I'm working on a 406 for my 89. I was hoping I might be able to get some help on a cam suggestion. 11:1 comp. Victor Junior intake. 800DP holley, 456 rears, 2800 stall. I run ported vortecs. I was hoping for 475 horse on a flat tappet cam. (All the normal stuff, posi, headers, shift kit...)

Good luck on the fuel injection project.

I installed and tuned a megasquirt on a mild 305 TBI firebird(zz4 cam with 416 heads), it's a great system. The on the fly tuning is great, took me about 20min to get a pretty good fuel map with someone else driving, that was the first time I ever tuned any EFI. It ran a 14.5 at 94 with injectors going static at 4500.

That is an awesome set of headers Chris! I've been through so many freaking parts its ridiculous lol, but I'm positive that this time it will finally get finished....

That is the honest truth about the primaries, but I didnt't want to post that in the description on youtube, because it would have sounded like I was making excuses. When we adjusted the float, with the secondaries finally squirting, it was impossible to hook. Do you remember Dave lol, the car smoked the tires up until the 1/8th mile both times....

That was such a nice '92 Firebird too, the township was complaining about the cars though, so I had to let it go. I really wish the '91 Formula would have worked out to tell you the truth....;

Dave, you wanna take a ride to the shop tomorrow? I want to modify the fuel rail a little, as I'm planning to plumb it on the opposite side. I'm going to use the cold start injector area as the supply line, and cut the return right by the regulator and re-route to follow along side of it. You'll just have to weld the front of the passenger side fuel rail shut. Here's the concept....;

.... too late lol, I went at it with a hacksaw. Was going to simply turn the regulator housing around, but it won't seat right, so I'm going to do it the same exact way in the pics. Going to run braided line all the way back to the sending unit in the tank and tuck them completely away from the exhaust, by the way, do you have a flare gun? I misplaced mine lol.

Yeah, please Chris. Let me see the modified rail whenever you get the chance. I just finished making a block off plate for the EGR to boot, so I should have a few pictures up soon....

Dave, I forget, what size is the fuel delivery line, as I need a fitting to replace the cold start injector fitting (it's too small)....

Re: Project: "Street Lethal", Let's Try This Again....

The fuel rail is almost done. In the first picture, you can see where Dave welded the fuel inlet in the front of the rail completely shut. The new location will be on the back where the cold start injector line was plumbed. Also, I didn't trust the return line coming from the regulator, a little too loose for my taste. Tomorrow I'm going to tap the hole and put in the proper fitting. Don't mind the pics, the weld will be smoothed, and the rail will be polished...;
