89 Iroc Sbc400 TPI Megasquirt Single GT45 5-600 rwhp build

well its time i post a real build thread
i just picked up a pair of f-bodys an 89 iroc and an 87 bird both cars are getting built, but for now the firebird has a dead 305 in it so im going to use the firebird to mock up the kit and build the downpipes so i can swap the stuff onto the iroc in a day or 2 so i wont have a long downtime with the car

the iroc was originally tpi but somone had converted it to carb and hacked up the stock harness and all in all its a hack job , but im going to completly remove the harness and ecm and do it the proper way

i just ordered this kit off ebay

and it should be here in a few days
twin t3/t4 hybrids .63 stage 3 hotsides and .50 t4 48 trim cold sides good for aprox 400-425 crank hp each

twin 38 mm wastegates with 8 psi springs to start

im going to get rid of the dual plane intake for a vic jr i found locally cheap
im also going to do a conversion on a holley 650cfm 4150 dp carb for blow threw

now when they did the carb conversion they left the intank tpi pump and just used an external regulator so what im goin to do is either install dual walboro 255's or a single intank 340lph pump and just upgrade the fpr

i dont know what im going to do for an intercooler yet ill decide that once the turbos are mounted up and i can decide how i want to run the intercooler tubing

more then likley i will get a flat rs hood for the iroc and cut the holes for clearance for the turbos then fab my own buldges to put onto the hood to cover the turbos

anyways heres pics of the iroc as it sits now and a pic of the firebird im using to mockup the kit andbuild the downpipes on

hood clearance is the same until your forward of the shock towers.... but yeah those turbo's are small so they don't stick out too terribly bad. i see too many massive singles and huge pairs of twins i forget how small a set of twins a milder turbo setup can get away with

about 2.75-3 inches on the bird so figure 2.5-2.75 on the camaro, i can get the motor down 1 inch, and i bet i could drop the crossmember down about 1/4 inch without issues

as long as i dont have to do over a 3 inch buldge in the hood it should look pretty good.
i do have another idea with a 4 inch fiberglass cowl hood that would be really badass but i dont have the skills to work with fiberglass the way i do with sheetmetal.
with sheetmetal i can form 2 perfect hood bulges pretty easy, with nothing more then some body hammers, dollys, bean bag, and an english wheel

id be lost with fiberglass

Consider what I told you in the other thread Dave. If you make 45-degree flange adapters to sandwich between the turbo flange and header flange, to clock the turbo's more towards the center, just a little bit, not directly over the carb, then you can drop the crossmember down a 1/4 of an inch, then go with a Sunoco/Jongbloed Hood. You should be good to go as far as clearance in concerned....

there is no such thing as a 340lph pump... 340 is the model number of a 255lph pump

No freaking way lol! You must of forgot what it is like over by Paul's house with all of the animals, not to mention the car sitting back there for almost eight years. When I got it back to my house, not only did the engine not crank, and not only did it not even want to start for that matter when I got it to crank, but there were chipmunks living in it. You remember that time when we were looking at a 4th gen Camaro in the B&B junkyard in Marlboro and that Praying Mantis was on you and you didn't even know it until I pointed toward it? The chipmunks were MUCH worse lmfao. My '84 was much more worse, trust me lol....

.... it's slang. Nice Smith and Wesson's lol.

The 305 took out a Nissan 350z yesterday, but then got its clock cleaned by a Nissan GT-R. Wait til the turbo goes on, cuz it's only scratching the surface....

good job on the 350z... but good luck against the GTR in the future. I worked at nissan for a couple of years in the service department the GTR keeps up with the enzo till the 120mph mark in tests and if the driver knows how to activate launch mode its leaves the line faster than a camaro ever could. but im all for older cars shaming newer technology.

good job on the 350z... but good luck against the GTR in the future. I worked at nissan for a couple of years in the service department the GTR keeps up with the enzo till the 120mph mark in tests and if the driver knows how to activate launch mode its leaves the line faster than a camaro ever could. but im all for older cars shaming newer technology....
I got some video's lined up with the 305 before the turbo goes on. So far I'm up against someone's HH3, and a '79 Trans Am w/400 & 4-speed, both will be filmed at the track. I was alone against the 350z otherwise I would have definitely had someone video it (all that porting paid off lol). Even the GT-R for that matter, I would have loved to of shown everyone how HARD that damn thing pulled me. It gives me even more incentive to get the 305 done even faster....

It is going to be a shame removing that bee-hive air cleaner. Any way you can fab the turbo inlet to accept that hi flow air cleaner. The body looks in nice shape.

Dave, check the numbers on the engine block in the back, because that might not be the original engine. It looks like the former owner didn't just convert to a carburetor, but switched the entire engine. 89 engine's should have centerbolt heads, not to mention a serpentine belt setup. Hopefully it is not a 305. Either way, if there is no 5.7 indication in the back, post up some numbers off of the front of the block....

theres also the numbers stamped in the front of the block in front of the passenger head that indicate what the motor was out of.

I have two BBS replica single turbo header setups if you need another set to play with, you would just need a decent size turbo for that 400. Running a single will keep the hood issue in check anyways. Or, just put the 305 from the Formula in the Iroc and twin turbo that, then either throw the 400 in the Formula, or sell it to offset some of your budget. Decisions, decisions....

After looking at the pictures, I wouldn't even waste my time with the BBS replicas, especially now that you have a welder. Just invest in a single plane, get a Holley 650 Double Pumper and convert it for blow-thru, then build your own headers. Damn thing should run some incredible numbers with that 400 Dave. How much stall you planning to go with, and what gears are out back....?

im not sure what gears r out back yet im hoping for a set of 3:42's or 3:23's hell i wouldnt even mind a set of 2:73's.

tomorrow i will jack u the car and dbl check the gear ratio.i need to pick up a dial indicator and a degree wheel and check the cam, sticking m fingers into the ex ports, the heads have been cleaned up so im sure its got an aftermarket cam in it.
rob u want to sell me that non ac box u got ?

well being as the motor is 400+ ci the tiens i bought arent going to work well on this motor, the logical choice would just be to get larger twins.well this will just make them stick up out the hood more.im going to get a set of shortys and flip them and build my own crossover to a single t6 based t76.

im also ditching the carb idea and converting back to efi with a megasquirt 1 v3 and a vic jr efi since i found one on ebay complete with rails and lines for 150 bucks

Good deal on the fuel injection, as carbs can be made to work well, but fuel injection allows so much more adjustability/tunability. If you want that delete box Dave its yours, the wiring has already been done, all you need to do is cut and solder to the stock wires (six wires) and you will have all four speeds for the blower motor....

Also, an 89 L98 Iroc w/auto will either have 2.77's or 3.27's out back, do you have an RPO code list under the console lid, or in the rear glove compartment under the hatch....?
