Twin turbo 1990 camaro stock 305 TBI?

I have a stock 1990 305 TBI and want to add a little power. Nothing huge. Is it possible to just throw on a turbo, or even twin turbos? Or would I have to add other stuff just to put them on.

Re: Twin turbo 1990 camaro stock 305 TBI?

Forged bottom end is a good idea. A very good Idea. I'd drop the stock TBI and look into some aftermarket Fuel Injection setups if you want to keep it. If you go that route, gonna need bigger injectors. Gonna need a good tune too. Drop the stock heads, they suck.

So, plan on: Different induction setup, tune, heads, forged crank, rods, pistons. Maybe fuel pump, lots and lots of piping, new exhaust. Definitely a new tune/engine management system. Don't forget suspension, tranny work, and rear end stuff, the stock equipment isn't the strongest in the world.

It's far from just a bolt-in and go kind of thing. But I'm sure someone else will chime in, you might be able to run a small amount of boost on the stock setup, but it won't be ideal.

Thank you! That definitely helped me out. I just needed a general idea on what to do.

the short answer is no, swap the TBI out and it gets much easier but it's still not a bolt on and go type deal with anything turbo in these cars, there are no "kits". For a stock 305 TBI that you want to just add a little power to, there are much better/cheaper options than forced induction. Now if your looking to spend a decent amount of money and make some big power yes forced induction is a great way to go (see post 2)

Honestly Im just looking to add some decent horsepower. Nothing huge. Swapping an engine is out of the picture for this one.

You can do anything that you want to do in terms of boost. Talk to RBob about his EBL control for the Throttle Body Injection setups, then figure out which direction you want to go in terms of selecting your power adder. Here is a V6 TBI w/supercharger (see below), so forced induction is in fact possible w/TBI. So long as your not planning on going beyond 15-psi of boost pressure, and so long as your air temps are kept in check, your cast assembly will work just fine. Every factory Grand National, TTA, Syclone and Typhoon came cast from the factory, and all were tuned for up to 15-psi of boost right off of the showroom floor...

A swap just isnt gonna happen while im in this household. I was also thinking about supercharging it but afraid im going to have to add a lot of other stuff in order for it to work properly. Im not exactly sure what to do here.

Turbos are a major commitment. Plan on putting atleast $25k aside to build a turbo car. Since you want to add alittle power I would recommend nitrous oxide.

Well then I was mistaken. 25k?! I was thinkin about just spendin 2 to 3 thousand. I guess I just have to do some more research about all this. Are superchargers any cheaper? Ive been researching about cold air intakes and throttle body spacers too? Anything would help, even if it adds just a little power. Thanks.

Re: Twin turbo 1990 camaro stock 305 TBI?

25K would be for a more serious setup like daverr has. You could do it for a couple thousand if you did most of the work yourself and bought second hand parts here and there. But like a few others have said there are better, easier ways to pick up some power.

How much power do you really want to make? Whats your level of mechanical ability? Honestly you could swap out the converter and change rear gears and that would make your car feel quicker. A full exhaust (headers, high flow cat, cat-back exhaust) would definitely help. Also there are some free mods in the TBI section you can try that are fairly simple and will make "some" gains in power. Good luck.

There is alot that goes into turbo setups. everything in the car has to be setup to go along with the turbo. If turbos setups only costed 2-4K ,then you would see a alot of ppl with turbo cars. Superchargers can get just as expensive. A nitrous oxide kit would cost you around $600. it really is a great bang for the buck for someone not looking to get too financially involved in .

Im figuring more for a well built turbo street car. Alot of ppl think turbos setups are just headers/intercooler/turbo/wastegate/blowoff valve. that just the tip of the iceberg.

Re: Twin turbo 1990 camaro stock 305 TBI?

In order to have a single turbo or even twins you have to be able to fabricate...
So, unless your willing to do the homework ie calculations, design, source the parts and weld them all together you're better off going with something pre-fabbed.

Nitrous ($600) is the quick and simple answer, but you'll be filling bottles...
A supercharger ($4000) is a great idea, but I don't remember seeing one for a TBI...

Now you can change your intake, heads, exhaust, pistons, crank, injectors, ECM, converter, tranny if you want to (to make any power adder work BETTER), but you don't absolutely have too...
Just remember the more power you have the quicker you'll start breaking things!!!

Good luck

Re: Twin turbo 1990 camaro stock 305 TBI?

Wow, some of these numbers are crazy. If you are able to fabricate you could easily get away with low boost, 4-8psi at most. You get what you pay for, but there are some nice ebay turbos. If I were to run boost, i would probably run no intercooler and just run a moderate 4psi.

Think anywhere from 1+ grand depending on what your goals are.

Re: Twin turbo 1990 camaro stock 305 TBI?

Well 14 lbs boost theoretically doubles your hp output so...
If you had a 200 hp car, 14 lbs makes it 400hp.
7 lbs boost gives you 50% more power which would total 300hp
3.5 lbs boost would yield 25% more power, giving you 250hp and so on...

Nitrous seems like a simple choice at this point doesn't it?

A little less than that actually. Wynjammer in AZ makes a TBI specific setup for our cars for about $2500:

http://www.tbi-superchargers.com/TBI...o_305_TBI.html

Its about as bolt on as it gets as you just swap out chips for the supercharger tune.
