Head Gaskets for blower

I am adding a D1SC to my car and will be running about 10 to 12 lbs of boost. What would be a good head gasket for my set up?

Re: Head Gaskets for blower

I've ran stock gaskets to 16 lbs (never detonated) and my friend RE-used a set of Felpro 1003'a and ran 24 psi with them! I am running Cometic MLS on my new engine and have detonated bad at 18 psi with no issues (car leaned out due to fueling problems).

Re: Head Gaskets for blower

Would these two be good choices for a blown motor?

The MLS is a better choice. With any copper gaskets, you have to install o-rings in your block.

I tried those expensive cometic MLS gaskets a while back. The guy on the phone at cometic kind of freaked me out with the machining requirements required for the gasket to not leak coolant. He recommended I spray both sides with gasket sealer.

I threw them in the trash and used a Felpro #1014.

The felpro gaskets have the wire ring that crushes sealing the cylinder. They have rubber raised traces around the water ports. You torque the heads once.

I can tolerate a blown wire ring. I can't tolerate coolant getting into my oil and taking out a $2500 rotating assembly.

Re: Head Gaskets for blower

I never reuse mls gaskets even tho they say you can. On a fresh block with fresh heads the surfaces are great for mls. No issues in my motors. I ran felpro mls and cometic. Cometic currently on my setup thats been disassembled and just scrubbed clean, and no issues. No leaks. Not that i expected any. No spray on coatings either

For stockish bottom end deal that may not have smoothest finish some other type gasket may be better, or atleast a thicker mls

Re: Head Gaskets for blower

Running Cometic MLS gaskets here. 2.5 years and not a problem yet. Not like I expect any either, like Orr said. I'm running ARP head studs and with the fine thread pitch on the studs and following ARP's spec of torquing the nuts to 80 ft lbs, there is WAY more clamping force on the heads than using the stock head bolts at 60 ft lbs or whatever the spec is.

Are you running studs?

Re: Head Gaskets for blower

Thanks for the replies. I am probably buying the head studs today for the motor.

I don't know what your deck finish is like. A lot of machine shops after decking the block will leave a finish that will almost catch a nail. It's not like they go over the deck with an end mill, it's a giant rotating cutting wheel.

If the finish isn't smooth enough, I know cometic gaskets will fail. I've never had an issue with the felpro gaskets.

The stud vs bolt thing on a SBC doesn't really matter. We've got 17 head bolts in almost a perfect layout. Head studs really help on stuff like powerstroke 6.0's that don't have enough head bolts by design.

Re: Head Gaskets for blower

Mine isnt mirror polished smooth but doesnt catch a nail. This is my second attempt with mls gaskets by cometic and again no issues noted. I even used the felpro blue mls that get a reputation for not sealing well and it also never had an issue. I guess my luck is better than others?

MLS all the way. This is the Power Adder forum right? Then why not use studs anything less, your playing with fire!
