Trying to understand the HyperTech Chip

I got the new Classic Industries Camaro catalog the other day (over 700 pages!). I was looking at the HyperTech chip descriptions and I don't understand some things.

According to the detailed description provided, the chip "retunes the engine for maximum power and torque at wide open throttle". OK, that's clear. A "recommendation" is that you put in a 155 or 160 degree thermostat. OK, that's clear.

I guess what I don't clearly understand is this - are they saying that they only affect performance at WOT? Is this to say that you will see no effect anytime other than WOT?

I have seen threads where people claim better throttle response. Better throttle response will not be WOT. Is there an important fact missing in the HyperTech description or are people claiming better throttle response imagining it?

What's the deal here?

What's the deal?

You posted in the wrong forum!!!

haha

For what those things cost you, you could purchase a cam, or halfway to a nitrous kit purchase. For everything that the hypertech PROm gives you, you can do yourself. ADvance your timing via distributor, and you can shim you fuel pressure regulator with a quarter and gain a few PSI of fuel.

Just not worth the cost.

this question would probably be better answered on the prom board, but i did have one of those hypercrap chips in my car, and i didn't notice any difference at all, now it's just sitting in my tool box collecting dust.

I suppose your points are understood about the wrong forum. However, my impression of the PROM forum is that it is more of a DIY flavor and I really don't expect people who burn their own PROMs to have much respect for over-the-counter PROMs. If they thought the aftermarket ones were OK, they wouldn't be doing it themselves - hence the "Power Adder" choice. From a marketing perspective, the HyperTech is indeed a lazy-man's power adder.

Anyway, I am still looking for an answer. My L98 pulls pretty hard at WOT and I am not sure myself if I could tell the difference without a dyno.

Should I re-post elsewhere?

I guess I wasn't that clear - does the HyperTech only affect performance at WOT? Or does it fiddle throughout the throttle position range?

I suppose it offeres gains over the whole range. I would think so at least.

Or maybe they are just jackasses and modify the upper end parameters.

Guess I cant answer your question.

you can always send them an email

but think if it is only at wot then prolly using the TPS

as for how it gets the gains

rather then having a static advance onr your timing it will give it a different advance curve as well as a different fuel curve

only thing I do not like about them is it a one size fits all

so it will not be made to fit the mods you have.....

I say go with a www.haltech.com

those suckers are sweet

Thanks, guys. I just sent HyperTech tech support an e-mail.

I also checked out the HalTech site. I am certainly no engine management expert - is this type of product easy to learn to make effective?

there is a lot of stuff there to learn but if you are good with engine tuning and if you have a dyno you can do a lot with it

if you are on AIM I can pass you a copy of the demo

I have access to a dyno - at roughly $80/visit with three pulls per visit.

What's AIM?

I could be wrong, but i think the hypertech legally only changes the WOT values.

Here is the response from the HyperTech Technical Support:

"Keith, our Power Tuning works at "Deep Throttle Openings". This means that any time the vehicle is under a load (i.e. going up a hill, WOT, passing) you are into the Hypertech Power Tuning. However, at idle and light throttle, you are still using the factory tuning.

Thanks!"

I think it is safe to interpret this as the chip only changes settings at WOT. At least I know for sure.

Also, I have downloaded the HalTech demo and will have a look when I get a chance.
