I'm trying to search for "C5 brakes" and the search function automatically removes the C5 and just searches for "brakes". Typing "+C5 brakes" doesn't work. Please tell me our search hasn't become this useless?

Re: The following words are either very common, too long, or too short........
Many users complained about the new search (some were legit), so we've been running the stock vB search engine for a few weeks now. This has pros and cons. Right now, two letters and less words (such as c5) aren't being indexed. A user cannot get around this.
I will see what we can do, such as perhaps adding important two letter words as an exception.

Can the same be done about the too long portion of that too? I was looking for details on a brake proportioning valve and I ended up reading about bleader screws, because proportioning is too long.

Same thing with numbers. 18+irocs only searches for irocs. I use the advanced search and it still is problematic.

Well, as I said, we're using the stock/default vBulletin search engine like just about any other vBulletin forum you likely visit. Of course there are setting differences per environment. Some websites don't have the amount of posts that we do, so they can afford to be more conservative on restrictions.
You may recall that in the past, while under different ownerships, we had this exact same issue where there was a character limit and certain words/terms were not searchable.
As I said, I will see what can be done.
Thanks.

I recommend looking into getting a search engine like the one on j-body.org. I seem to find exactly the info I want there, or maybe thats just luck. like you said, we have A LOT of posts, so it may work just because of that too.

Unfortunately, no matter what, it is certain we will not be able to please everyone. We are still running the stock vBulletin search engine, which means it should be fairly easy to use given users likely have prior experience with it on other websites that likely use vBulletin due to it's popularity. I'm still trying to get a solution for this issue listed here, but it's not a mouse click away and it requires involvement of a few others.
Thanks.

Something has changed, because now I can search for "code 42" and it doesn't stop me, however the results that are returned are as if I only searched for "code". It's still doing the same thing, just not telling me about it...

Not exactly, but not forgotten nor given up on. I don't want to cause too much of an issue because some of our sister websites are currently using a new search engine (not the same one we all previously was using and was a source of complaints by some users), and there are dozens of reported issues by users of those websites with the newer search engine due to unexpected and undesired results per search. Based on reports from other users of those websites running the "beta" search, I've seen worse and believe we are better off as-is, sans the two-character issue, as we're using the stock vBulletin search engine. Yes, it's not perfect and this is one of those issues. It hasn't been forgotten or given up on.
Thanks.
Thanks.
