We have considered removing this feature, but the system is currently setup this way to prevent duplicate pictures from being uploaded over and over, which consumes space. The attachment database is several GBs as is.

Re: re-using pictures in another thread
Well, when you upload the file that is already in the database, it provides you a link to the thread:

Click on the link and find the attachment. Right-click on the attachment and save the URL.
Post the URL inside the IMG brackets.
The method above allows you to link to the attachment. Or you can simply, slightly, alter the file to change the checksum.

ahhhh thanks JT and sorry my comp was being dumb and i kinda posted the question twice. if i do that will it post the picture again or the whole post/thread?? also if you guys are wanting to save space and stuff, why not delete threads that havent been active since like 2004? it would save a lot of space and i understand that it would prolly take some of our "information" away.

Yes, it's not exactly the easiest procedure. It would be nice if the procedure was more automated. But that's the design fault of vBulletin software, and not really the website.
We will not physically delete threads. Lots of old threads contain valuable information. Threads itself would not save nearly as much space as a duplicate attachments would. Simple text does not consume as much space as images do. We aren't exactly in a storage crunch issue or anything, but it's wise to not be careless and think ahead.

Re: re-using pictures in another thread
The other option, is to a site like imageshack, or any of the other image hosting services out there.
Re: re-using pictures in another thread
I'd rather pick the attachment feature for the sole reason that hosting changes, which can make for images lost. With the attachment feature, they remain with TGO so there's little chance of the pictures getting lost or removed.

Re: re-using pictures in another thread
Its also a burden on TGO's server, as well as the database when its just something like a picture of a persons car.
Re: re-using pictures in another thread
If we were in a bind, we would probably be more strict on policies in regard to the attachment feature, photo gallery feature, etc. So far, it has not been an issue. http logs show people are also interested in viewing eye-candy in addition to technical resources.
It's the choice of the user as to either hosting offsite (hotlink) or within the forums via attachments.
Thanks.
