We have a few members up that way, but most of them are out on the coast. The most likely place to meet up with a bunch from down here is if anybody goes to Famoso for a test and tune day.
We had one member stationed at the Navy Hospital in Lemore, but he got transfered. Welcome aboard anyway. By the way, how long have you had the Berlinetta and how many miles does it have on it?

Do you know if the engine is all original? 2.8's tend to throw a rod
after about 60,000 miles. G.M. fixed the problem with the 3.1. The parts interchange. I've also heard that changing out the rod bolts for ARP fasteners will take care of it. Dean knows much more about the v6 than I do, but it is cheaper to fix it before a rod lets go.

As far as i know i got the original engine, If i can find the casting numbers ill post them to make sure that it is the origninal block. Now that i know that the 2.8l block tends to lose a rod, ill make sure that i keep the engine maintained better than what the original owner did. (BTW i got my windowsticker AND build sheet!)

In '86 the 2.8's went to larger crank jounrnals and improved the oiling problems that existed in the early motors.

In '87 they went internally balanced.

The pre '86 motors are very commonly known as 2.crap due to there lack of reliability.

The GM timing chain is weak in all of them up through 3.4's in '95. A Cloyes double roller timing chain will get you more than the 60,000 miles life the GM ones do.

The problem with the early 2.8's is the oil starvation on the crank causes excessive endplay in no time if you trry and run it higher rpms all the time (above about 4K). The '87+ 2.8's can run 5500rpms very regularly and the bottom end is rated to 7k.

I still would not suggest wasting your time even with a late 2.8 or 3.1 (basically the same motor except the 3.1 is strokes with different pistons- so longer crank throw and decked pistons, everything else basically the same- 5 more HP, thats it)

You best platform is the now discontinued 93-95 3.4 Camaro blocks. You'll have to find one used and rebuild it(which is better anyways because the block is heat cycled and harder. Machine it and go. The 3.4 blocks are ribed for strength and they have stronger cranks to work with and can be machined down well and nitride since we do not run the DIS ignition. This is the "F' you need to look for in salvage yards for a RWD 3.4l 60*V6. You can see the block ribbing in the picture also.

Thats also good to know, I'm looking for a block to swap out, but right now i dont got the time nor the money to do it and i got even less experence on swaping engines, i helped my dad once, and that was on a ford f150 lol, btw, how the hell am i supposed to time this thing when a peice of the wireing harness is right over my distupter bolt, ive used all types of wrenches (for teh distrubter) and i cant get under the stupid wires!

I just checked www.CRATEENGINEDEPOT.COM and they still have the 3.4 listed for S10 at just under $1900.00. I don't know if this is left over stock, or if they just haven't updated their web page, or if the 3.4 is still available as a crate motor.

Welcome
Check out the West coast board. There are a lot of folks from Fresno and around that area.

WE could all meet up in Hanford for the Outlaws.

I'll be out that way this weekend for the ATA state shooting event in Kingsburg.

The Outlaws are sprint car racing cars that pull wheelies and usually have wings that keep them on the ground.

Go fast - turn left - steer right

Actually it is pretty awesome racing. They look like they are always on the verge of crashing. All the turns are taken in a full on opposite lock power slide. Furthermore the cars have the highest power to weight ratio of ANY race car running in America except dragsters. The engines make about the same horsepower as Indy cars, but the cars weigh 200 pound less than an Indy car.
