305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

Hello,
I have been reading the post on the 305 stroker, I would like to stroke my 305 but I do not know if my t-5 will hold up, Its actually a WC t-5. Please advice what is the best route to stroke and make everything work in order to pass smog in cali.

The Wc-t-5 should be able to hold up.

smole

I run a non world class T-5 behind my TBI L-98 motor has never given me a problem ..... Disclaimer though I don't beat the heck out of my car either but do occasionally get on it.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

300 hp at the rear wheels while drag racing with drag radials seems to be the magic number. The members have generally had good luck with the t-5 until they started putting down 300 hp or so at the rear wheels and then if they were runnning drag radials and racing, the t-5's would let go. If you don't power shift into 3rd gear, a t-5 should be fine. The only question that I would have about your proposed combo is that you are going to spend as much to build a 335 (stroked 305) as you would to build a 383. You could build a 350 that would make more power, for less.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

Stroking a 305 is a waste of a crank. Why spend the same money to be slower? And if you just want to be different, then build up a 4 cylinder Iron Duke and put in your car. That's real different.
Please, just build a 350. There's a reason why it is the most popular engine.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

If I was to swap a 350 into my car will I have somg issues, I probably would of had them w/ a stroked 305 but if my t5 will hold up then I might just do that when it is time to rebuild, I have 79k on the clock and the car was always well maintained by myself and previous owner so I will just run as is, dump in some headers, refresh my fuel system, and paint and i should have a nice cruiser. I don't like to beat my car either, I just want to have some power for when some rice rocket pulls up and starts revving their wind up toy on me.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

No, you wont have smog issues. There are several members with original 305 cars who now have 350's or even 383's and have no trouble passing smog, including myself.
The T5 will usually hold up to a 305 or a 350 or a 383 if you dont race it. Mine always broke at the track, except one time on the freeway a snap ring around 5th gear broke and I had no 5th gear.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

Well that's pretty low miles for a 305. If I had a 305 and was planning an engine upgrade. I would not spend the money on installing headers. I would first start with intake stuff for your engine upgrade. I had a stock 350 and put on a Super Ram before my engine swap. The 383 is the ultimate power maker over the 355. I like the smooth pick up speed from 70-90 in matter of a slight throttle. And when your in overdrive at that speed you just tap the throttle and feel the torque it's making. Also the 3:45's help out with that. Collecting part by part you can make a pretty nice built 350 or 355 also. No problems with smog just make sure the stuff your buying is all smog legal and your fine.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

So if I swap a 350 TPI into my already TPI Iroc I will not have a problem, if so please indicate what parts beside engine and computer will I need to change. CaliBranden I will take youyr advice, as of this moment all I have for my car is the custom CAI from this forum where I cut the air ducts and run air vents thru the fog lights, TPI air foil, K&N filter and soon I will be doing the bypass to my throttle body, I have read that a bigger throttle body is no good but I will just do it, I'm going with BBK, I also want some Edel intake runners and intake set up. Hope to see you and your rad rides on Aug. 5th at Rickys and Ronnies. Thanks to all.

smole I can tell you where theres a complete L-98 in a 89 IROC its is only the long block though, has the 083 heads and all. its at a pickapart. you could probably get the whole thing for under 150 bucks

At the time i dont want to swap the engine until I really need to rebuild it, it only has 79k mi on it. I just wanted to make more power with a 305. Thanks though.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

hoist up some sails ..... That will give the 305 a little extra go. ...... seriously though I and many others have tried the more power out of a 305 and comeup to the same conclusion. A stock 350 will run circles around even a semi-moded 305 simple as that. I once back in the day decided to try and make my LG-4 run intake, exhaust, better cam etc .... And after all that my V-6 camaro could still beat it.

As for smog don't even worry about it. My engine is a hybrid and it passed with ease .... Just have a new cat before smog.

Try gear changes, headers, maybe even a different torque converter, a little porting here and there, better cam, better heads.

Good luck with the 305

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

My engine is an LB9 w/ t-5 so already it is pushng some power, so I might try adding some bolt on for now.

Re: 305 Stroker w/ t-5 in cali

You could benefit now and later by doing headers first, then at least the exhaust is ready when you finally decide to drop in the 350.
