Re: header protection
There is some heat shield stuff that you can wrap around the header tubes, I dont know the name but I have seen it, probably expensive.
Maybe you need to consider rerouting your wires.

Re: header protection
Like injdinjn said, they sell header heat wrap that is supposed to insulate the headers and keep heat from radiating outward. I don't think they're very expensive, however if you have any warranty on the headers then they become void when you use the header wrap, because the wrap is rumored to eventually cause the headers to rust out.
And Darkshot was referring to having your headers ceramic coated inside and out, the headers will last a very long time if you have them ceramic coated, and it should cure your problem with everything getting fried.
This is probably the best place to get your headers coated.

You can also have your entire exhaust system coated by them.

Re: header protection
Coating them is a very good idea, however covering them is a definate no no.
First tho you need to figure out what is causing the heat, headers should never get that hot. Something has to be causing it, like late timing or lean condition.
Putting a band aid on doesn't help cure what is really wrong.

Accel just introduced plug wires with ceramic boots for this very problem. Here is the link, go have a look...

Re: header protection
you are right the headers being wrapped causes them to rust away!
and also ave been having a timing problem with this freakin car ever since i built the motor...i bored over the block .030 flat head pistons mild can aluminum heads msd ignition bigger intake street legal headers roller rockers n other stuff i cant think of at the moment :/ and i pass smog
well Ever since i built that motor i could NEVER get the timing right...its TBI but the weird part about it is that when i bought the kit from summit.....they told me i should pull about 400 or close to hp...mmmmmm i kinda dont think so (-.-)...but i did, believe it or not keep up with a gto 6.0 i was on his door the whole time n that was because i got cut off on the fwy......
well any way when i took it to a dyno tune the guy told me "what the **** is Wrong with this shYt! i cant find the peak!"
well i went home n did what he recomended....to change the harmonic balancer... as i loosen the bolt in the center of the crank i notice the harmonic was REALLY lose!.....i pulled it off with my hands EASiLY i was like ....oh....no.... i looked over at the crank and my crank tip was broken i look at the harmonic n that piece was there with the CRACKED harmonic.....sad day that day so im guessing that was my problem....
now im converting the car to manual I bought a borg warner t5 world class fresh rebuild..with a stage 2 centerforce im also going to customize my computer (id rather not risk anything) and well i was SUPPOSE to start the car a month ago...but some one told me about a pilot bearing not installed....n well this is my first time dealing with manual parts...i was like SH!!!!!!!!!!T so now im laggin on it but im getting on it this friday...
so what do you guys suggest?

Re: header protection
Do you have stock heads? If you have angle-plug heads, it will push the plug boots against your headers and they will burn no matter what. I'm not sure I would recommend coating a set of Edelbrock headers, they are really a pretty marginal design if you plan to get any serious HP, and coating them will probably run a few hundred.

Re: header protection
Yes, Accel makes their Extreme 9000 wires which are supposed to be very heat resistant. I run these on my car. Never had a problem.
As Don mentioned though, you might want to check your timing. If it's off it will cause excessive heat in the headers and bake everything like you've described.

Re: header protection
Also keep in mind there are two lines on the harmonic balancer. I think the TBI and carb cars use the straight up line as 0* but the TPI cars use 2 o'clock as 0*.

Re: header protection
There should be two grooves or lines in the balancer, plain as day. If not then its probably a carb/tbi balancer, but I am not sure.
