Code 42 is the ESC module. You could have a problem with it, the knock sensor, or the wiring between them and the computer. The ESC module is the square box on the firewall on the driver's side, and the knock sensor is on the passenger side bottom of the block. Dont confuse it with the fan switch, which is above it in the head.

I thought the ESC was code 43. I looked it up in the manual at school and it said it was either the ignition module, the wiring, or the ECM. and everything seems to point to the ECM. I already put a new module and semi-checked the wiring, so I'm guessing it's the ECM.
Don't give the wiring a quick glance. The ecm works by sending signals to sensors which are variable resistors and then reading the return signal. Anything that causes resistance will throw the signal off. Make sure all connections are clean and tight before you condemn the ecm.

Code 42 is EST(electronic spark timing). Check ig. module, wiring , and ecm. Code 43 is ESC(electronic spark control) knock senser, and the related circuits. I am still chasing an intermittent code 42 and it is driving me crazy. Kevin burned me a great chip and the car hauls *** when the code is not set. It will set it only on start up sometimes, not all the time. I shut the car off, clear the code, start it up, no code, go for a haul butt drive. Then I can shut it off and the next start up get the code, sometimes i dont get it for four or five starts. Car runs great besides the clearing the code every few starts. Ill get it sooner or later.

You're right Jeff, I was mixing up my acronyms. Code 42 is the EST, the timing adjustment part. Code 43 is the ESC, the knock sensor part.

BINGO! Exactly what my car is doing. Just this weekend a two-way trip to my mom's took me less than 1/4 tank w/o the light. on sunday it swallowed almost 1/2 a tank one-way. normally it always runs about 160-170* w/o the light, with the light it runs about 220-240*. Let me know if you ever find the solution.
