backing plates interchangeable 9bolt to 10bolt?

i have a 9 bolt with PBR brakes in my 3rd gen. unfortunately i have 2.77's. i'd like to swap rears for a better ratio, my question is can i use the same PBR setup & backing plates on a 10 bolt?

i have a 10 bolt disc housing i can build up but it has the old iron calipers... blecch!

also, are 10 bolt disc axles the same as 10 bolt drum axles? i didnt think so but i thought i'd ask...

No, the backing plates are different.

The axles are the same, sometimes. Lots of the early drum axles have a flange that's too large (outer diameter) to fit inside the disc caliper. Most of the later ones are the same. If I knew the exact diameters I'd give them to you, but since I'm an idiot, I don't.

People will give up their spare reproductive parts for those 9-bolt PBR backing plates. Sell them, and get a couple dozen sets of the 10-bolt ones.

thanks for the reply RB83L69. i have 2 10-bolt rears to play with (a 3.23 disc w/ bad spring pack and a 3.73 drum w/ bad bearings). i'm hoping i have the good axles in the drum rear and can get one of those SLP posi units to put one good rear together for myself.

its always good to have spare reproductive parts... i'm glad to know the asking price for those backing plates thanks again!

They won't interchange, the bolt patterns are different. RB's right. A drum brake axle has a larger flange diameter than a disc axle, you'd have to massage it a bit to fit it. Best bet would be to swap axles.

Here's a thought: Find a 3.27 drum 9 bolt and swap the brakes over.

dan, not yet my car still needs the drive wheels on the ground. i probably wont do anything with it until winter. you wouldnt want to ship it down there anyways... it would cost $200-$250 to ship.

thanks ed...
i am on the lookout for a different rear, just havent found one yet. i bought the one that is in the car now without knowing what it was (friends' parts car), i heged my bets that it was better than a 2.77 and it wasnt. it was still worth the money for the PBR's, old rear was a 2.77 iron caliper rear.

so the backing plates for disc-drum are interchangeable on a 9-bolt? not on a 10 bolt because the drum backing plates are welded on, right?

Unless I'm out to lunch, yes they will bolt on. All 9 bolt axles are held in with the axle retainers unlike the 10 bolts and their C-clips. The 10 bolt backing plates are not welded on, they are held on with 2 bottom bolts and a clip up top that holds the wheel cylinder on.

Sent you a PM.

A friend once told me: "Don't believe anything you hear and half of what you see."
