Low speed shuddering

Low speed shuddering

91 RS 305

My car will shudder during low speeds..or moderate to light acceleration....and not as if i weren't giving it enough gas...feels more in the undercarriage.....like the transmission were slapping the undercarriage. I had a friend ake it around the block, and he suggested it may be driveline slap....which i haven't heard of before. I also feel it when coming to a stop, but not necessarily braking...again, under low speed conditions. When i am on it, it doesnt do it, didnt do it when my friend rode it hard either.

he also suggested me turning my rotors on my rear, or wheel bearings?

I got beneath the car and tightened my torque arm a bit, and checked my swaybar endlinks...all seemed fine...i dont know what else to look for.

EDIT: I also checked the tranny mount of course...but it seemed fine....tomorrow i will place the car on 4 stands and jack the tranny up to see if there is any play.
any suggestions?

Is there any leakage around the rear tranny shaft? Or play in that bushing in there?

no, there isnt. I replaced that bushing when i replaced the clutch assembly about 5 mos ago.

Is it a consistent shudder, or intermittent? Does it get faster or slower with vehicle speed or engine speed? How many miles you got on the tires? I once had a shudder at low speeds that I thought was wheel bearings so I went out and got a new set and came home, went to put the jack under the front of the car, and just glanced at the very inside of the tire and said "son of....."
The belt had serperated towards the very inside of the tread so it wasn't very obvious. Just a thought thought.

I have the same car: '91 RS w/305.

I swapped out the driveshaft for an aluminum LS1 shaft and it went away. I suspect it to be your stock steel shaft. I'd try this first.

Also, did you look at the torque arm mount itself? If it's worn, this may contribute to the "slapping" you mentioned.

OK! found the issue and it is resolved.

I have a Spohn Adjustable Torque Arm and had adjusted it with my original springs. I replaced those springs with 2inch drop springs and forgot to adjust the torque arm.

The torque arm was adjusted to be shorter than it should be, placing, where the driveshaft meets the pumpkin, at an upward angle. When the car is put back on the ground, and force applied to the suspension it will relocate the driveshaft somewhat.

I adjusted the torque arm to be longer than before, and secured all the nuts resulting in complete "slap" elimination and tighter hookups.
