9-bolt disc on 10-bolt drum?
Will this work or do I have to use 10 bolt backing plates? Oh, the 9-bolt is an 87 and the drum is 91. I have done a search but did not find the answer for this question. Thank you for any and all help-Jeff

First off, I wouldn't use the '87 disc brakes. Those calipers are prone to failing and not working right unless you install the recall kit in them, and by that time you might have well just installed the better '89-up PBR rear discs. All the rear disc brakes from '89-97 are essentially the same so there's lots of them out there. I wouldn't waste your time with the '87 brakes.

Ah...there's the catch. NO, the 4th gen backing plates won't work, but you can still get 3rd gen backing plates from GM and all the rest will bolt right in. Contact Dal at VanDevere Olds and he'll hook you up.
Please note, you will have to do some brake line mods to get your current axle's lines to work, or spend $30-50 on new disc brake hard lines and be all set.

Oh yeah...I need to clear this up. The disc backing plates will work on the drum rear but you'd have to do a bit of modding to get them to fit. There's a tech article on a drum to disc swap on the home page so look into that. It's really nothing more than sawing off a little metal off the top of the axle flange and drilling a couple holes.
Thanks Apeiron.

1. A brake setup
2. Disc backing plates for your rear (9 or 10 bolt)
3. New/different e-brake cables
4. Either get new axle hard lines or mod your own.
5. Tools
I know this link is for LS1 style rear brakes, but it's along the same lines of what you will need to do. It's on the home page.
