Break Line HELL
Break Line HELL
wow.....
as I'm typing this I'm about to go through a nervous breakdown.
Yesterday my friend and I were driving, and all the sudden my breaks went right down to the floor. Luckily, nothing was hurt. I pulled into a parking lot and left it there overnight. Today, I took off the front passanger wheel and discovered that my break line had a hole in it. So I went to autozone, and he gave me a new line. I went to put it on and the end that hooks to the steel hose broke off while loosening. The steel hose, at this point, has nothing attached and is just sitting there under my wheelwell. While panicing, I went back to autozone and the guy helpfully told me that I cut off the end of the steel hose, and connect it to the new brake line. He gave me this little tiny gold threaded screw/connector thing. So I went back, did what he said by sliding the connector over the open-ended steel hose, and connecting it to the new brake line. and after 3 hours of swearing kicking and all that, and I had my friend pump the breaks.....break fluid leaked everywhere at the spot that I have the connector. I almost went crazy, seeing as I was outside in freezing weather for 4 hours fixing this. What are my options now? Any idea's? thanks

Well honestly the safest thing to do is replace the hard line. It isn't very long. Just make sure you bleed the master cyl. and the calipers. I wouldn't mess with rigging your brakes. You could end up killing yourself or others on the road.

hey thanks guys
383....he gave me a tool that you put in the middle of the hole to expand it to make a 'mushroom' of the end of the metal hose. is this what you mean by flare? sorry I'm a newbie.
Where could I get a new hard line? And how would I go about slapping this on there? Thanks

You can try your local autozone dealer or try classic industry.

flaring the hard line on my 91 Z was EXTREMELY difficult. It's a 6mm steel line, which looks to be extra thick (of course!). I'm guessing he gave you a double flare kit - you _really_ have to crank that flare tool down! We had you use a deep socket over the tools handle with an extension attached to it to get it turned enough to use a coupler (the gold thing). Even then, getting the flare centered properly was NASTY!
Good luck - please do it right and be safe! Do _not_ let the autozone guy offer you compression fittings...

its just tough to do if you've never done it before.....and if you dont get the flare nice and smooth and large enough it will leak no matter what you do......somtimes you have to chop the piece of the end and flare it again

if it is a 91 like his sig says that should be an ISO or (bubble) flare.
double flare will not work.my 88 had the metric flare(ISO).
just a thought

your splicing a union into the line to repair a section thats missing, you can use a standard flare on both ends which is easier to make....as long as you use the correct fittings with it

Just replace the hard line. I was under the impression that they sold prebent lines with fittings already installed on them. I've installed them before. If not then here's a quick link that will explain how to double flare the ends. (*I was too lazy to write
).
How to flare brake line
Don't forget to bleed the master cyl. I'll explain if needed.
