Tip on when replacing motor mounts

Hey guys I just put moroso solid motor mounts on my car, and if u ever have replaced a motor mount in a third gen f car before you know its not the easiest to do.

I got all the bolts out with a 15mm(if i remember right) a universal and a 12 inch extension and a wrench, except for one a had to saw off (top passenger bolt in the front).

Now when i reinstalled them instead of puttin the bolt down and trying to thread the nut on (which would have been near impossible) i put the bolts up thru the frame and the nuts on top.

I got all but one bolt up thru with the same tools i used for the removal, but the last one (same one i had to saw off) i couldnt for the life of me get it up through, i tried for about 20 minutes at least with the socket universal and extension combo, but then i dropped the bolt inside the frame, and I reached for my handy Telescoping magnet on a stick to retreive it. Well then i got the idea, hey maybe this will be able to get the right angle and get it up through, and bam, it took 4 seconds. lol.

If u dont have one of those tools i suggest getting one, they really are handy, and now is my favorite tool

This is just my opinion, and I'm glad you got everything to work right, but sawing bolts and putting them back in upside down doesn't exactly sound like solid advice.

i couldnt for the life of me get the one bolt out, id rather spend 2 minutes sawing it off instead of messing with it for like a half hour which i did, i got all new bolts nuts and washers anyways.

puttin the bolts up thru the frame instead of down i dont see the big deal, and besides my friend with a 454 BB in his trans am did the same and its worked fine for him.

you dont have to worry about sawing bolts OR putting them in upside down for something like that... you just have to know when to not do something like that...

good idea though, i need to change my mounts soon.

Now what happens when the bolt and nut loosens and all of a sudden the mount slips and does serious damage? This is why you put them from the top down. That way if the nuts loosen most likely the mount wont move like it would without a bolt in there.

It doesn't matter if they are up down or whatever ..
if they come loose they come loose, the motor will still move around, and it will fall apart no matter what .. just use a little lock tite

yes it does. yeah the motor will move a little but if they are put on the topside you wont loose that bolt if for some reason it comes loose.

i havent run them in the camaro yet as it is still in its slow build up stage. when i had the el camino they made the motor sit a little bit higher. that was my only complaint.

now there has been much talk about solid mount, engine and tranny, putting stress on the transmission case. thus, resulting in a cracked tranny or broken mount. i have never seen this happen but it can.

actually i ended up taking them off and putting normal ones on, the people helping me (older guys who know their stuff) said it was a very bad idea in a daily driver.

ive seen that happen, always run a poly or rubber mount somewhere. either the motor mounts or the tranny.

Huh… I’ve been wondering about solid mounts in 3rd gens. I’ve installed them on a couple of other cars and never really noticed significantly more vibration or had any issues. In some cases you do notice the front end being somewhat stiffer, since the engine block suddenly becomes a solidly linked part of the front suspension

i ran solid motor mounts in my 83 camaro with a poly trans mount. i also had tubular k member and art morrison coil overs with tubular a arms. never had a problem with vibration but it was not a very strong motor.

i put them on my daily driver and i love them....but i also enjoy the vibrations i get from knowing my motor is on and running well.

it also helps with the cars reaction time.
