Scary loud creaking noise

Hey guys,

I have noticed this very scary loud creaking noise coming from the back of my car when I drive. Doesn't seem to matter if I turn or go straight on a flat road...all of suddent I hear a loud creaking noise, kind of like the sound a really bad hinge on a door makes but obviously alot louder. I'm stumped.

Have you jacked the car up to look under it and see whats going on? From the way you describe it I would guess something with the rearend itself or brakes. Are you sure there isn't something in common when it happens? Maybe some kinda driver input, turning the wheel, stepping on the brakes, etc?

I heard the noise even while cruising down the street and I wasn't applying the breaks.

Check the suspension by jacking up the rear and inspecting all the suspension components for worn, broken or missing items. It could be something a simple as a broken sway bar end link or missing sway bar bushing. If all is fine, I wouldn't be surprised if the sheet metal is breaking where the top of the rear shocks mount. To check for this, pull out the rear seat, pull up the carpeting behind the seat back and check the rear shock mounting pocket. If it is breaking you'll need to get someone to weld in a new matal plate custom fit to the pocket.

Is it only when you go over bumps or is it a constant noise while driving?

It happened once while coming to a stop and it happened another time while cruising down a flat road around 60km/h.

Did you by chance have the shocks/struts replaced recently?

The rubber mounts ontop of the springs likes to makes very loud noises if you didnt grease them

How much life is left in your rearend?
If youve got alot of play in a differential youll hear a loud noise and feel the diff when small hills and whatnot move a constant speed from load to unload coast

Checked the U-joint lately?
Never heard it stop making noise when it was bad, but never hurts to check it
