Thoght it was the rag joint...
Thoght it was the rag joint...
Well people,
I am sure someone has a quick answer. So her goes
I have play in my steering and was about to order a rag joint, mounts at the end of the steering shaft right before the power steering...
well I decided to make sure and pulled the plastic cover that covers the shaft, hopefully you know what I am talking about.
Well I could rotat the shaft left and right but the play was NOT in the rag joint but in the actual box, and i believe that box is either the powersteering, steering geer or possible both.
Anyway, does this meen it is shot?
Looks like the only fix is to unmount it and from what i can see it will be a pain.
any components that can be swapped out or do I have to chage the whole thing?
I have no idea about prices on parts yet. anyone had it fixed by a shop? if so how much does it run to do?
Thanks,
sam

If you narrowed it down to the steering box, have you tried adjusting it? Try reading RB83L69's post in this thread, Rag Joint - Makes big difference?. I would check its adjustment before resigning to the fact that your steering box is shot.

No, you do not have remove the steering box. Re-read RB83L69's fourth paragraph in his first post in the linked thread. He details adjustment.
Sounds good. I will look into adjusting it tomorrow if the weather is nice.
The post you are refering to mentions using a spanner but does not really go into detail of the actual adjusting process. Things like should it shaft be unmounted then adjusted or adjusted with the shaft in the box?
Anything that you might be able to think of that is not mentioned in the post you are refering to would be very helpful
Thanks
Sam

Guys, can anyone expain the adjustment?
I looked righ after the ragjoint and there is one bolt about 1.5 inches. That is the bold that tightes the one shaft over the other. Is that what needs adjustment ? The description being referenced to in an earlier post does NOT explain much so I can really use some help

I sold my Bird over a year ago, so I'm going by memory, but.... If your talking about the adjustment for the steering box, there is a nut on the top of the box that is threaded over an allen head bolt. You have to loosen the nut, and tighten the bolt down. But if I remember correctly, there is a very limited amount of adjustment, and you have to be carefull not to do it too much and crush it. I think your are supposed to turn it until you feel the first bit of tension. Hope this helps.
