when I turn the wheel half a turn, sometime less, right or left I hear a poping noise under the car. I can feel it at my feet too. all the linkage, balljoints, brakes, lines, and struts have been replaced less than a year ago. what do you guys think it could be? I'm swapping the springs out in a couple of days and was just wondering if you guys could give a general idea where to start looking while I'm gonna be under it. don't think I've encountered a noise like this before...

It's not really a noise that scares me. I just hope nothing is getting ruined under there. and I hope that it's not anything expensive to correct. sounds like something may just not be aligned right possibly

It is very common on front wheel drives. That means the CV shafts are going bad.

I have no idea what it could be on the trans-am tho. If i had to geaus i would think it is something with the shock mount like jkwild said.

I'm gonna head up to summit to pick up a new set of Moog strut mounts. since I'm lucky enough to only live 25 minutes down the road from it.

Lucky you on saving shipping. You might consider that the wheel bearing might be bad.

I thought about that, but I figured it would pop more often then just when I turn.

I thought it might be your problem, because I believe I have something similar to you. Whenever I am turning tightly, like pulling into a parking space or backing out of a space it feels like the tires are hopping and I can here them slide a little. The car also at the same time of course reacts to this motion and moves with the hopping feeling.

exactly what's happening bluejae. my friend's sisters grand am had a bad strut mount on her grand am a couple years ago and it gave away and shot the strut through the hood of her car. she never replaced the hood and the hole is still there. it's hilarious. it's a real stereotypical lookin hole, the metal is peeled back.

I have this exact same problem. When my 89 IROC turns into or out of a driveway or when i make certain bouncy turns I here a "pop" I swear it was from the back but it could be up front too. I put all new struts and shocks on 2 years ago. Could the back shocks be making this noise?

i would look at the upper strut mounts first.......i didnt have any noise or any feeling of this in my sterring or suspension....but look at the stuff that is never removed from our cars to often. i put tubular a arms on my 86 iroc about a year or so ago and had such a hard time getting the bolts out that mount at the pivot points. here after swearing and throwing things, since you cant get a good hit with a hammer in there, i finaly got the bolts out and i think from memory 3 of the 4 bolts were worn down by about half the size they should be from the metal sleeves inside the bushings. my car wa very well taken care of since new and i was very suprized to see that. but after seeing them it scared me to know i was out doing well over 100mph with it and cant beleive they never broke. they were half the size they should have been and i never felt any sign of them or something being worn like that, the car was very tight in corners and sterring. it might not be a common problem but it obviously is a problem. give everyone a heads up to check EVERYTHING no matter how big or small and if it takes an extra hour, its worth the safety of all the fellow 3rd genners and the safety of the 3rd gen it self.

ALL the suspension on my 84 has been replaced at this point except the a arms. I've been looking into getting new ones. I'll prolly do that when I strip the car for paint.
