widest tire on my stock 16" rims

I search but could not find anything for my specific wheel. I'm sure they are all the same width but better safe than sorry.

My question is what is the widest tire i can use. I think mine is a little on the small side. I have a 91 RS with the 16" orig. RS rims. I need some new shoes before spring so i figured it was best to look around now.

Thanks!

Factory put P245/50ZR16 on the '91 B4C, same wheel as yours.

How'd you manage to fit a 275 series on your rim? I was under the impression that without changing anything whatsoever, you could only fit a 255.

Re: widest tire on my stock 16" rims

the yellow firebird in the sig, and all scca a/sedan race cars i race against all have 275/45/16 inch hoosier r6 or a6 tires on them. dont believe me go to asedan.com and ask around. nothing special in installing them, they are mounted right at the track. 250.00 each tire mounted and balanced. if you want to get serious about racing, stay away from the local discount tire stores. let them stick to the family car tires!

thats crazy....lol i beleive you but that has to be a mother... to put on an 8 inch rim, i watched the guys try to put a 285/40 on my 9 inch rim and i think i would have gave up cause of being afraid to damage the wheel. do they go on easy?

Re: widest tire on my stock 16" rims

Just because it's done in some racing series and in some auto-X classes does not make it appropriate for general street driving.

Differences in tire construction may permit relatively wider tires to be mounted on a given wheel (cantilever slicks come to mind here).

What people do for tire/wheel combinations when there is a maximum wheel width rule in effect (and the tire life itself is greatly limited) is not something that you should expect to do on your daily-driver. Assuming that the race tires are of adequate load capacity, it's more likely that you'll cord the tire before a heat-related carcass failure would occur. On the street, with unknown loading (possibly overloading) and uncertain inflation, the heat related issues become more significant. So you need to be a little more conservative in your choices.

On the track or on an auto-X lot, all of the people out there know what the risks are, that they can have serious consequences, and they should be prepared for other vehicles occasionally having equipment failure issues. That's not the case on the street, where other traffic (including pedestrians) is far less predictable and fixed obstacles are generally much closer to your line of travel.

Re: widest tire on my stock 16" rims

Race tires like the Hoosiers do not have as much steel cord in them so they are much easier to mount. its the steel cord that keeps the structure of the tire and the heat down. Thats why racing rubber heats up so much quicker. And thats why he can get those on an 8 inch rim.

I run a 275/60-15 on a 7" rim on all four corners of a vehicle I own- been doing that for 18 years and drive this thing hard- the aspect ratio being a 60 give me taper to get away with it, and high pressure counteracted with vehicle weight gives me a good contact patch. This truck corners pretty darn good also I might add. Here is a pick of those 275/60-15's on7 inch wide steel rims on the truck without front body panels- Pretty meaty looking.
