Re: Rubbing when turning

On my 1991 RS with 215s on the front i believe at full lock i would rub, i could have 225s though. THis was before i lowered it, they rub now even after lowering. I can see where they rub its not covered in dirt when you have the tires off. It shouldnt cause any damage unless its horrible. Like i said mine only rubs at full lock and im almost always never in full lock unless im going real slow trying to park.

This is why a Wonderbar is necessary--that is to protect the steering box area.

Hmm is that the cause of that? would a wonderbar reinforce the area and eliminate the rub? it only happens like movin real slow. Never thought it caused any damage. If thats the case they should have included the wonderbar on all models... i dont think RS's got them.

Only the IROC with its 16" wheels got the Wonderbar. It won't help the rub; however, it may save the steering box area, regardless of tire size:

The following is from How to Tune and Modify your 1982-1998 Camaro by Jason Scott:

"The problem stems from high forces transmitted from the steering box to the chassis, especially under low-speed cornering, such as when maneuvering around a shopping mall parking lot. Fat performance tires present a great deal of resistance at low speeds, which imparts considerable stress into the steering system, and ultimately attempts to rip the steering box from its mounting surface--especially during "full-lock" turns, where steering torque is greatest. Over time, these forces weaken the chassis surface around the steering box and can result in torn metal."

Very interesting, i usually only read on why a wonderbar is not a performance mod, never heard anything about how it actually strengthens the steering box area.

I beg to differ. My 89 with 15" rims (door sticker proves 15") has a wonderbar. When i took it off to blast/paint it, the wonder bar (along with 36mm swaybar) looks as if it was never touched previously.

However I have no way of proving 100% that someone didn't add it.

I should have said that the Wonderbar originated with IROC's with 16" wheels; however, I believe all IROC's were equipped with them, even the later models which had 15" wheels.

Re: Rubbing when turning

Ok I found the reason it is rubbing the person who owned the car previously must not have seen that the front rims and rear rims were different sizes so we looked just for giggles and yep he did cross them so on the side that is rubbing has the rear rim on it and it is bigger I would have never thought that it could accually be the problem but it was Thanks..

Re: Rubbing when turning

that is what happens when you let some tire jockey do what he wants as he talks to hus buddy about this hot chick he met, when she was not hot and he really never met her but he gets so carried away lying about it he does not know enough to pay attention, and the customer not only reads the sign that says "our insurance prevents customers from entering the shop" and then thinks they shoudl not actually go in to watch lover boy so he does not screw up the car.
glad you got it fixed.
