stupid a arm question

Stupid question, are our a arms shared with other models? They sure look like the 2nd gen ones but I'm not sure if they are the same, almost looks like the 2nd gen ones have the bushings a little further apart but I can't confirm.

Does anyone have dimensions or an old GM part #? I have a lead on some arms but the seller doesn't know what they are from. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: stupid a arm question

pa racing sells 2nd gen tubular a arms in sets (upper and lower) for around 800 dollars.
im not an expert, but it seems to me that if it requires upper and lower, and ours only have lower, then they must be different, but i dont know for sure.
contact them and ask...
im sure they would have an answer

Re: stupid a arm question

2nd gens use double a arms, ours uses a McPherson strut but the old style spring is still retained, the holes are even there for the shock in the center of the spring, the shock is just not there because of the strut (GM cheaping out)

Re: stupid a arm question

yeah, i dont know.
i wasnt aware that shocks and double arms would be more expensive than single arm/strut.
i figured the reason was for handling...

although i guess double a arms can be tuned much more easily by reloacating the upper arm and installing taller spindles.
we are pretty much stuck with our geometry

Re: stupid a arm question

The arm is set up for a spring and shock, so it must be someething GM either had lying around or is used in a car with no McPherson strut. The McPherson system is a compromise that offers more room in the engine bay but the suspension geometry is not as good as a properly set up double a arm system.

Re: stupid a arm question

The third gen arms, 2nd gen arms will bolt in but are an inch or so longer. (from the poly joint to the ball joint)

Re: stupid a arm question

which would give more negative camber correct?
it would also push the wheels out about half an inch or so.

Yes, I was talking to soultron about this a few months ago. Basically the drift crowd of 3rd gen owners was looking at using the 2nd gen lowers to get a little more tire to chassis clearance so they could improve the steering angle on their cars.

Re: stupid a arm question

Do these numbers mean anything to anyone? 461860 & 461859

They must be old GM part numbers, can't find anything on them.
