How strong is a 9 bolt?

Well, i'm about to "inheret" one and was wondering how much hp/torque it will sustain. Also, as of now i have the stock Drum brakes and was also wondering what is involved in a drum to disc swap. I also need to know if any custom parts/setup will be needed before i start doing this swap. I just hope it is as easy as the make it look on Hot Rod TV (they never curse or have any problems)

Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

9 bolt is strong enough to take 400 hp according to the people who designed it in aus LS1 commodores run through the same gear sets that you do even modded ones
btw gear sets available for 9 bolt go from 2.7right the way to 4.11 in aus ...
even in usa they where the HP option instead of the crappy 10 bolt

Would the stock gears from my current 10 bolt fit the 9-bolt? Also, how come there is no listing in Jeg's or Summit, is there a different name i should be looking for?

Times in sig are with 9-bolt and SLP 3.70's. Never had a problem...

There is no listing in Jegs or Summit because the 9 bolt is only an f-body option in north america and not all cars have them making aftermarket sources very few.

Nothing internal between a 10 bolt and a 9 bolt is the same. The only thing these diffs have the same is external mounting hardware.

There are some suppliers that carry a few gear choices but the gears are expensive.

if anyone would like some info on where 9 bolt parts can be obtained (in aus) email me
complete instal kit bearings seals etc around aus$600 which will be around 400 usa$with freight my guess
btw these rears ends have been used in aus since 1977 and are still used today
also have heard that a company called spicer has bought dana ...and borg warner so maybe someone in usa will get parts

Last I checked, www.ring-pinion.com and www.drivetrainspecialists.com sell 9-bolt gears, but only 3.70's to replace your 3.27 and 3.45 gears. They wont fit 2.77 gears.

RUNNING HIGH 10's WITH THE 9 BOLT!!!!! WTF. I guess my 9-bolt must have been seriously messed up when I bought it used. I've got an LG-4 and run mid 15's, and I busted the pinion when street racing.

they are availabe and are still being made today in aus for aussie cars dont listen to what shops tell you is and isnt being made they ARE available and stronger than 10 bolt

try australia it is still the rear end being used here by GM holden AND fraud dont need aftermarket ANY rear end shop in aus fixes these rears every day

That's nice to know but by the time it takes to get a set of gears shipped to north america, the cost will be even higher.

If someone is determined to run a 9 bolt and needs the lower gears, then buying a set from AU isn't a problem. When you consider the final cost and the fact that other needed parts such as larger axles and carriers are either not available or priced to high to be affordable, building up a "Better 10 bolt" or buying a drop-in 9" becomes a better choice. At least if you break parts in these, replacements are easily available.

If you live in AU then running a 9 bolt is your best option but then you wouldn't want to drive a Skoda either.

btw everything that we in aus get for our cars takes a week or so to get parts
costs (i believe) getting the parts over to usa for the stronger of the 2 rears available in usa for 3rd gens i just keep watching threads that say parts are not available all it needs is one place (like the links you posted NOT to lie to you about availability of parts and stocked some there wouldnt beany problems i have been told that parts havent been made for 9 bolts for 10 years ...parts suppliers in usa are lieing to you THAT is the problem
