Help! SSM subframes & SLP exhaust problem
I just got a call from the shop that is welding in my subframes stating the subframe on passenger side will not go in place because it makes contact with the Y-pipe. They said it is not just a small section so from their explanation it is not a simple modification to customize it without messing up the subframes.
Anyone have experience with this and how did you solve the problem? Or did you just go with another subframe brand. I have SLP headers and Y-Pipe & 3inch cat back.
Need feedback & thanks.

I would love to hear your input on this situation! I have SSM subframe connectors and am planning on getting SLP exhaust. Please tell me what solution you came up with!

Yikes. I'm in the same boat with the rest of thest guys.
Did you install new motor mounts when you installed the headers? Any problems with the steering shaft? I'm just trying to figure out the positioning of the motor that would/might cause your problem. I wonder if the Y-pipe could be tweaked a bit to help it clear? Might not hurt to call a muffler shop and ask if that can be done..
When I installed my SSMs, that's what I did with the stock Y-pipe (just gave it a little pull and slid the connector in). It doesn't touch or rattle.

I just read the same problem in the May, 2001 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. They were installing bolt-in's from Competition Engineering though. They were putting them in a 3G Firebird and it had the SLP headers and y-pipe also. Comp. Eng. had made a 45 deg. notch in the connectors already, for the stock system, but the SLP collector is much larger. All they did was, after the connectors were installed, they continued to cut that notch longer with a torch until it went to the front end of the connector. Then they welded on a plate where they cut at a 45 deg. angle also. They have a link at www.gr8ride.com. Maybe the article is on their website.
If you are having them welded in, I don't know if this will work. But I'm sure that the shop can easily find out. Then cut and weld the connector for not a whole lot more money, because they are welding the connectors in anyway.
Hope this helps.

I have slp and spohn connectors and there was no way the passenger side was going to fit in between the y-pipe and the floor board, so we just cut several inches off the sfc and welded it in like normal. I also contacted steve about this and he said it would be alright.

I'm going return the SSM connectors and purchase spohn after talking with them and seeing their product. I like theirs better because it ties the frame together where the transmission crossmember bolts up and triangulates it will the frame connectors running lengthwise on the car.
They said that no matter what frame connectors you go with you are going to have the same problem. They said the best thing you can do is cut them just prior to the y-pipe and weld them in (as suggested in previous post). I figure it should be ok with the extra support their frame connectors offer. No matter what, it looks as if it is going to require a little creativity. Hope that helps everyone.

Sorry Jza and to answer your question I've had the headers/ypipe installed for a long while. I just installed poly motor mounts the last couple of months and never had a problem with clearance before or after the motor mounts I have the 1 5/8 headers and it clears everthing no problem. I've had my SLP headers and Cat-back for about 8 years now and it still looks like new. I have no intention of cutting up the exhaust and ruining it just to be able to install the frame connectors. I would rather cut up the frame connectors and customize them to fit the car. The motor mounts may have raised the engine a little but not enough to make a difference and a muffler shop was welding the connectors in for me. I feel the SLP exhaust system was one of the best purchases I've made (I'm sure it will last another 8 years

Well, thanks. That helps a lot. I'm going to be ordering my SLPs in a few days (!) and what you said lets me know I won't regret the cash I'll be forking out for it.
But now, I'm just a little concerned about my SSMs... I'm getting them Jet-Hot coated too, so like you, I'll be damned if I'm gonna mess them up to get them to fit. Especially since I got the SFCs for free and welded them in myself, so it's not like I'm losing out in any way by cutting them.

so do the SSM sfc's run between the exhaust pipe and that 'seam' in the floor or do they run on hte outside of the seam? if in between, how much room do you need for the tubing to clear? like 2"?

I just put in S&W Racecars SFCs in mine and there was absolutely no problem at all with exhaust clearance......
