Rear PBR caliper Q

After looking at a couple 4th gen rears in a salvage yard, the rear PBR calipers look exactly like my 89s. Are they the same?

Thanks...

Damn Jeff Gordon...

They are identical with the exception of some of the ebrake parts. I would think you could put them on your car.

<chokes on coffee> Huh?! For real? The backing plates... they'll bolt to our disk brake axles? Not that I've ever seen a 4th gen in a junkyard in NJ, but...

The 93-97 rear brakes are a pretty easy swap. The only thing you have to modify is the "brake weight". Since the thirdgen rear is 3" shorter that brake weight gets into the LCA mount. You can hack it off and flip it around, that's what we do. Or you can probably just eliminate it, it doesn't really do much functionally, GM put them on to dampen vibrations (supposedly).

10-bolt only. Why do you think you can still get the backing plates from GM?

I was mainly concerned with the calipers but it's an interesting topic. I'm still considering a 4th gen rear to some extent I suppose. I asked the guy what they were getting for those rears and he said "About $600". Yeah right...

I figured they could be used if I needed a core or jsut one to have around in a pinch.

Oh yeah...what the heck is the "brake wieght" Steve talked about? I thought those were on the pre-89 type?

Thanks.

The 93-97 cars have some sort of brake weight on the brake caliper assembly that isn't present on the 89-92 cars. According to the above, it can just be removed.

The early disk axles had weights on the caliper, too. At least, the axle I took from an '84 TA does!

How important are those hunks of metal? Would I be really sorry if I, say, cut them off? they may not amount to much, but any reduction in unsprung weight helps, right?

Considering how poorly the ebrake works on the 82-88 brakes, I'd be hesitant to hack any part of it up .

Z28Racer - didn't your 9 bolt have the PBR discs or is it a drum setup?

the one under my 87 has the 12" rotors and the PBR calipers already.

It was a disc setup 9 bolt, the holes for the caliper and the backplate were just slightly different, might be able to make it work.

Ok, now after i grabbed the set of earlier brakes in my garage that i bought under the impression that they were the 89-92 off someone here, they seem to bolt right up to my backing plates, so im guessing i have 88 backing plates huh, i'll bet the 89 up ones DO fit, now if i can only find a set of 89 up plates for 9 bolt, anyone got a set ?

In that case i'll just have to talk with my buddy who's good friends with someone big at aerospace components and see about getting them made, or having a set of thier 11.375" dual piston brakes changed to fit
