This item will work with TPI, SBC and BBC. It features bolt in spring perches for standard springs and lowering springs. The K-member will except factory motor mounts or solid mounts like UMI P/N 0051.

#2402- 1982-1992 GM F-Body Tubular K-member, Coil Over
This item will work with TPI, SBC and BBC. This item is designed to work with coil over set ups only. The spring perch bolted to the K-member in the picture will be replaced with a support brace. The spring perches can be purchased at a later date if needed to convert to factory style springs. The K-member will except factory motor mounts or solid mounts like UMI P/N 0051.

But.... is there any chance we can have custom powder coating done even at an extra price? Sometimes a change from red and black is nice.

 

I ordered a k member with lsx mounts and coil overs. What coil over kit do you recommend?

Coil Over a-arms are coming next, they will be identical to our current a-arms but will have no spring perches.


We can do custom powder coating to an extent. We do all powder coating in house so that isn't an issue. The problem we are having now is our current supplier now has minimum purchase pounds on the powder, so custom colors are getting expensive because we have a lot of powder left over and expires overtime. If you serious about a custom color let me know and I might be able to work it out for a charge. We have silver on hand at all times.

oh I am ready, it is just that I have to make a decision in terms of oem or UMI because this part will be shipped 10K miles overseas where I am posted and the shipping price is of enormous consequence since it will be a huge chunk of FOB pricing. So can you email me (as opposed to continuing the thread here) a quote for 2401? I am hopefully expecting the same discount that was availbale few days back which was a total of 20% including an additional 5% third gen member discount; then we can look into the international shipping quote you can get for me to find out FOB pricing. Thanks so much in advance.

 

There is no mention of what these are made out of. DOM? Chromoly? Strength is a concern as always with these, so i'm curious.

 

Says on the UMI site they are made from mild steel. Kinda need to be mild steel if they are MIG welding them (nothing wrong with MIG welding BTW). This is the heaviest constructed K-Member out there. No other K-Member has a second tube of steel in its hoop to brace the A-Arm mounts.

 

The tubing is DOM. We may add a chromoly option in the future, however since the item is mostly fabricated from flat steel the tubular components would be the only chromoly part.

Is it cost prohibative to use chrome moly plate steel??? Seems to me its the same price for 4130 sheet as it is for A36 or SAE 1020 sheet.

 

Since 4130 plate is the same weight as mild steel plate, it wouldn't impart any weight savings, only increased cost. Remember, 4130 tubing is only lighter because you can have a thinner wall thickness with the same strength.

 

I'll buy that. I thought I was pretty upto date with material prices. Just looked it up and 4130 is nearly double the price of mild steel.

We just placed the K-members back on sale under a pre-order price of 20% off. The "Thirdgen" code is no longer valid but instead we just placed the k-member at a straight 20% off.

Our K-member will keep the engine in the same location as factory, there is no moving of the engine. This way your current transmission crossmember and drive shaft will still work and fit correctly.

Customer will pay shipping but we increased the discount to 20% (Rather than 15% off then another 5%), it comes out close to the same.

We are still working on them, we had a few bugs and tweaks to work out and trying to get them into final production now.

Just another quick update. The k-member is heading to full production, we worked out the tweaks and fixed a few things we didn't like. The few pictures below show some of the exhaust clearance and fitment.... nothing fancy but they help give you an idea.

While the machine shop is beginning to build the production pieces the design crew is finishing up the LSX mounts.. this won't take long.

So we are getting close and want to thank everyone for the patience.

Christina, who handles all our marketing and advertising here at UMI is currently building an 85 Camaro Z28, the goal is to have it completed before mid April for the Spring Carlisle event. We will be installing and using a full UMI suspension including the new front k-member assembly. We will be posting pictures of this build soon so stay tuned!

Man, I still want in on this, Ryan... I think it was my turn to respond to the email we had going. I dropped the ball. lol. Was one of the "tweaks" fixing the AC compressor clearance issue?

 

Expect a call from me on Monday. I'm gonna order a SBC K-member and A-arms for coil springs. All in black. Thanks for making quality parts.

 

A long tube header shouldn't cause any issues at all, there will be plenty of clearance for this so no worries.

In order to run A/C with our LSX k-member you will need to find a truck A/C unit or something that bolts into a different location. The other option and best option would be a relocation kit like Kwik Performance sells. This will relocate the A/C to the top and away from the k-member. After some time we are unable to include A/C clearance with our design with out effecting the integrity of the part. Also after some research and speaking with some customers many people ditched the A/C when doing this swap, many mentioned the challenge of running the lines and converting it was too much. Others mentioned they had no desire for A/C. So A/C will work if relocated upward, we figured if you are going to the extent of this swap a few extra dollars to relocation the A/C shouldn't be an issue.
