front end clunk
front end clunk
i have a 1991rs it has a clunking in the front end. it seems to be near the passenger side foot well. it happens under hard accel and decel . it tends to happen more while turning but happens in a straight line as well. the car has new tie rods, ball joints , struts and sway bar mounts. none of this has made any improvement. im at a loss. any help from the sages here at thirdgen?

Re: front end clunk
For the heck of it, check the transmission and/or torque arm mounts.

Re: front end clunk
Broken spring or worn a arm bushings.
Sometimes it can be hard to see the broken spring if just the tail end is cracked.
Almost certainly need new bushings on the aarms by now.

I was hoping it wasn't the a arm bushings . They are still there but look a little tired. I was hoping it was something else that i was overlooking. But im beginning to think you are correct

Re: front end clunk
jack it up at the control arm and check for play in the wheel holding it at 12 and 6. a little play in the bearings is normal, but significant play can be from a bad strut, bj, mount or loose strut bolts.
check your idler arm by trying to move it up and down by hand. any movement is cause for replacement.
with it on the ground, have someone turn the wheel while you watch the box and linkage for anything obviously moving incorrectly.

Re: front end clunk
K-member = the piece that the engine sits on and the front lower control arms are bolted to
Sounds like your K-member bolts are loose.
