Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

Hey guys, I currently have Sportline springs in my 88 Camaro and although the stance is ok, it’s not 100% where I’d like it to be. I’ve been looking into getting weight jacks to have the ability to adjust the ride height at each corner to my liking. I’d also be paring them up with Koni yellows. Sound like a good move?

Re: Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

Yes. Good move. I've had 'em on both of my IROCs. No regrets. ....I will say though, don't be lured into getting stiff springs unless you track the car. Be honest about how you'll use the car. I've learned that as low as possible and as stiff as possible is NOT a guaranteed way to good handling. Trial and error, as well as being honest with yourself about how you drive is key.

Re: Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

I don't think there's a bad brand out there. That being said, I've always used Ground Control. I think they were the first to make a kit for our cars, and they've been very helpful when I've had questions. Their website leaves a little to be desired, but if you search TGO, you'll see plenty of happy customers. I typically just call or email and speak with Donovan. He's their resident thirdgen guy. They have the same typical two "official" options just like other manufacturers. One around 800 or 1000 up front, and one around 180 or 220 out back. The springs aren't specifically MADE for these kits though so you can use any spring that's the right physical size and behaves how you want it.

Thanks again, I just emailed the crew over at Ground Control to see what they recommend. The only other brand I saw worth using was UMI.

Re: Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

If your looking for a fun street car setup then 850/175 is the most i would suggest with 750/150 being a nice sweet spot.

i have the umi 850 kit in the front and it rides great and im still competitive against similar cars with 1050s in the front but my car is lighter then most. Im going to have the front umi 850 kit for sale soon if your interested

I'm running a 750/150, with Koni's and raised ball joints and couldn't be happier with how it handles, though I'll be the first to say it'd be soft for competitive track use. Getting ready to put the new 8.8 in, an it's got the axle side lowered panhard mount, and I'll be adding stiffer rear springs to compensate.

Re: Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

I have ground control and Komi yellows up front and QA1 coil overs in back. I’m very happy with the front setup. There are pics in my build thread (link in signature) if you want to see them.

I just saw your build thread, very cool. Question, the weight jacks come with springs of my choice correct?

Re: Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

Yes, they do. You'll have to specify what spring rates, though they can certainly help choose. "Most" brands offer a 800/175 "ish" option and a 1000/220 "ish" option, give or take a little based on where they're sourcing their springs. The lower 800/175 option is MORE than enough for a good handling street set up.

Yep, my car is a daily driver/touring car with some “spirited” driving on occasion. The softer springs should work perfect. I’ll pair them up with some Koni yellows and hopefully won’t have to touch the suspension again lol. I really appreciate your advice.

Re: Weight jacks vs Sportline springs

Weight jacks have short springs so they do need to be fairly stiff or the spring will over travel. I have 800 lb/in on the front. I think 750 lb/in is the lowest you can go before running into travel issues.

To put it in perspective, Hotchkis lowering springs are 600 lb/in. I think the stiffest stock spring ever offered on our cars was 750 lb/in. That kind of gives you a reference point to work from.

There has traditionally been a large selection of springs to choose from because the springs were common design with circle track racing. However that changed a few years ago when circle track began allowing coil overs, and I think the owner of Blue Coil died. That nearly killed the spring market overnight and our choices thinned out big time. At this point you just kind of get the choices you get and don't get to be real picky.

I've had Blue Coil 150 and 175 lb/in rear springs, and Eibach 180 lb/in. The Eibach are a totally different construction and winding pattern. I prefer the Eibach on my car. Seems to give the better ride quality and keeps the car off the axle snubbers when I get into the throttle. I was having a terrible time with tires spinning until I got those stiffer springs. You can get those through Ground Control Racing.

I'm currently on 750# in front and no issues yet. I've pushed 'em a good bit, but.....I wouldn't officially sign off on them just yet. Donovan and I discussed them, and he felt good about them, but wanted to be sure I understood that they weren't listed as an option because Ground Control wasn't completely sure they'd have no travel issues. But like I said,so far so good. I've also got the raised ball joints in an effort to "control the roll" lol.
I think the stiffest stock spring ever offered on our cars was 750 lb/in.
Do you know which? I wasn't aware they went as high as 750. Not claiming to be an expert on springs rates though.

....and per what QwkTrip said, I've had several sets of springs from Ground Control and all have been Eibach.
