Torque arm

I’m not even sure I’m calling this the correct name but…I have my torque arm removed, got a new bushing and IT IS TIGHT AS HELL. I can’t get the clamps back round it. Anyway the trans is getting replaced soon so not worth my time to fight with it….or is it? Question…can I move the car on and off a trailer without installing this thing? Or will it cause issues?

appreciate any help

Re: Torque arm

You will be fine pushing the car without it. Just don't try to drive without it.

Re: Torque arm

If the driveshaft is still in it you will be placing a lot of load on it, specifically the u joints. Did you buy the correct bushing? Did you lube the bushing? If it were me, I'd put the old bushing back in before you move the car. The rear pivots hard when you start remove the torque arm.

Re: Torque arm

Yeah it’s the correct bushing and yeah I lubed it up before installing. I did see hawks has an aftermarket one for 85-02…will that not work on a 84? I’m confused by this as well. It fits perfectly in place and lines up great. As mentioned the brackets will not go around it

The reason why I posted this, the inner bracket locks into the outer bracket (in the transmission), I think I used a small pry bar to apply force too the inner bracket to close the distance and start the bolts in the thread.

Re: Torque arm

I used the biggest pair of Channellocks I could find. Might even have used a C-clamp on that one.

Re: Torque arm

Pain in the @ss but it’s in there. Can’t speak to any other year than 84, but if you put a strong clamp on the top and bottom of the bracket to compress it a little bit it’ll go back together. Shave the rivet heads off and pull out the two little shims that held the factory bushing. That millimeter or two made all the difference. In my opinion unless yours is trashed or your building a rocket probably one of those things one should leave alone.
