Ok I have most of the parts for my project this summer. I just want everyone’s opinion on whether or not I can get the car to run on the stock chip or buy a $350 custom chip.
Setup:
ported world s/r torquer 305 (have)
ZZ4 cam 208/221 .474/.510 112 @.05" (have)
edelbrock TBI manifold (have)
350 injectors (on the way)
Ultimate TBI mods
I will be installing all this in three weeks, I don't think I can become a proficient prom burner by then.

You're going to get a whole bunch of opinions on this one. (opinions are like butt holes, everybody's got one). The problem is that there is nobody here that I know of that is running this exact combo yet, so nobody can say for sure. I know it won't run well with a stock chip, but I'm betting that it will run. I am doing the same mods in June but I have a vacume AFPR that should help me get the car running a little easier. I am going to burn proms myself and get it running good eventually. Thats part of the reason I am waitting till June so I can get alittle prom burning experience under my belt.
Iroc22 is running a similar setup in his car with a stock chip only his cam is alittle smaller on the intake dur (206*)and alot shorter on lift . He says his car runs good.
IMHO you can make it run with the stock chip, but to have it run right and to get all the power out of this combo there is no way arround a custom chip. And I think you would be better off doing it your self.

None of the "experts" out there are going to be able to guess what your setup should be like if you want it to run well.
you are gonna need a custom chip for sure. not just calling up some company either, you are gonna have to find someone who can datalog your car and build you a chip basically. or you can spend the about $300 to get all teh stuff and learn to burn chips your self

Thanks for the responses.
Well, I think I am going to get a custom chip from Ed Write to use until I can burn my own. I saw that Iroc22 was running off the stock chip and wondered if I could do it and save some money.

i'm pretty sure if u go over a .500 lift on stock heads without the valve guides machined for diff. seals your keepers or retainers or wuteve will come down and slit the valve stem seal and that would suck. just something to think about. also for a 305 there is no need to go past a .470 lift or u will just be going out of its power range its liek over kill and u might lose power

do u really think he will need a vacum can? thats not that much duration. i am gonna be runnin a 230/230 duration @.050 480/480 lift cam in my 350 and i plan on just runnin my brakes off intake vacum. i think its gonan be just fine
Well I am going to be running the World S/R Torquer 305 heads, and they can take .560" lift, so I should be alright.
As for the vacuum can I should not need one, I think their was someone running the LT4 Hot cam in a 305 without one.
But it looks like the general consensus is that this setup will not run off the stock chip, so I will probably be running of an Ed Write one until I can burn my own.

a vacuum cannister!?!
Ive run a 214/224 cam with .5 lift and a single plane manifold with tbi on a 305 with heavily ported heads.. you dont need a vacuum cannister or anythign near it for that tiny zz4 cam and it will run on the stock chip. You can really go crazy and the car will still run.. not particularly well but it will run. With the stock chip mine ran ok..wasnt anywhere near potential but it ran. With that mild combo the stock chip might run pretty decent. It will hold you back though and either learn how to burn chips or convert to carb

I vote for spending the money you'd be giving for a chip that's only going to be a guess and buying tunercat and a promburner.
It's a good learning experience

I was looking at the lift guys. LOL I sure hope emissions won't be a problem with it. Anyway, good luck on the cam swap. The LSA isn't too bad and duration isn't too bad. The lift is obnoxious!
I KNOW with .490/.490 my car's computer couldn't handle the Blue Racer/Wolverine cam I had and I went to the Crane 2030 FT.

I did not think emissions would be a problem since I have a cat and all the original equipment. I passed Arizona emission fairly easily, but I don't know how much these modifications will affect emissions. When I have to take the test again I put a bottle of that stuff that guarantees a pass, run the car at 220, and cross my fingers.
I will eventually begin to burn my own chips, because after this I probably won’t do any other engine mods.
Pablo....How well did the car run with that cam? Were you able to keep it as your daily driver on the stock chip?

yep.. it wasnt exactly great though. Alot of other things changed on the engine at the same time. Part throttle was quite crappy with it. WOT wasnt anything to write hope about either
Thanks for the reply.
Well, I just wanted to know if I can bypass buying a custom chip. If the car will be drivable on the stock chip I will just learn to burn my own. $350 is a lot of money that could go for other things.
