TBI Challenge runs august 17th at e-town

hey gang,
a bunch of us are gonna go run tbi cars to get some updated et's for soem more mods for the tbi challenge. the event is efi civil war at englishtown. gates are 9am and i think it si 20 or 25 bucks to run.
i am gonna run my 2.0 tbi cavalier, base line was high 19's, gunning for high 18's on free mods.
jprevost is prolly gonna run his car again with a new torque convertor and on soem better tires, who knows what we will see from this. he has soem fresh tuning and it feels stronger than ever.
blackbird305 will be at the track with a few more chassis and suspension mods to see if he can knock down a 14 on a stock cam/heads combo. he has already topped 89mph, if he gets a chip done by then he may be able to top the 91mph mark.
deadtrend may come. not really sure what to expect from his car if he makes it, he has a ton of mods since his last trip to the track.
anotehr local may be there with his 454SS truck. all he has is a cat back an open element and 4.10 gears(stock was 3.73). with jsut the gears he ran high 15's, hopefully he can dip into the low 15's with the new mods.

anyone else who is plannign to attend or may try let me know. i just pm me your mods and what you hope to run and i will post it up for ya. i will post up results as people give them to me.

I'm trying everything in the world to get off of work, so most likely I'll be meeting up with everyone there ...

Last time I raced I had just a open element mod and 25% underdrive pulleys on. The pulleys didn't do anything for me and I had a 60 lb. sub box in the back that I didn't have time to take out. Now I'm running with the mods listed in the sig, a MUCH lighter and hidden stereo system (sorry, but i need music) that weights about 10 lbs. Best run was a 16.4 @ 82 mph, which isn't bad stock.

I have learned how to race since then. Getting better launches, and could care less if my engine blows cause theres a 350 awaiting to be built in my garage. Stock internals off the engine, stock tires, stock chip, better suspension, exhaust, and made my hood semi-fuctional to take in some cooler air.

Now lets just hope i don't miss a gear cause my clutch has been kinda flaky lately. My throwout bearing is going for one ... hopefully I'll take NJ's cavalier down!!!!! j/k

Im kinda kicking myself for just jumpping head first into heads/cam because Im think with the time in my sig if I had gears/posi and headers that I coulda pulled 14s, or damn near close.

Oh well my ****s gonna be done soon

I just ran 15.8 today with only crank pulley, 3.23, flowmaster and K&N drop filter. Timing was advanced to 6 degrees.

I took on a similar modded tpi only diff was the tpi!!! He had me by a nose everytime, 0.2 sec diff between our times...

To add to this it was all day runs from 11 am to 4 pm with like 100 degree weather and 60% humidity... from what everyone was saying there times were about 0.5 sec off their cold air/night times so I could probably be in the low 15's...

I had him on the 60 ft everytime, but he had me at the 330 ft he always broke away slightly and there's less than a 0.1 s difference b/w our increments...

This was the only time he had me on the reaction time.. all day I was having 0.6/0.7 s reactions while he was anywhere from 0.8 to 1.1 I managed a higher 1/4 mph everytime but he always had a better trap time.

TBI TPI

0.904 Reaction 0.862
2.203 60 ft 2.308
6.571 330 ft 6.563
10.178 1/8 ET 10.096
68.35 1/8 MPH 69.78
15.849 1/4 ET 15.670
88.91 1/4 MPH 85.71

Here's my take, I need headers, free flow exhaust... high flow cat time...

Third gear really really bogs compared to the other 2 gears. Its surging like mad. It really feels like my exhaust system is holding it back from doing as well as a TPI... sucks to have the stock headers, y-pipe and cat-back...

looks like the extra mid range power that tpi supplies took ya. you had him on mph which means you have a better power to weight ratio, but his car is more efficiant after shifts.
what rpm are you shifting at? most stock cammed cars will do best to make the 1 to 2 shift around 5000rpm and the 2 to 3 shift around 4700rpm.
good work, tune it a little more and go back and get him.

I shift around 5200 rpm give or take, I'm pretty consistent with my runs <0.05 deviation from run to run. Only diff b/w all runs were standard things, ice, tire pressure and timing. I did 3-4 runs at each setting, and an initial 2 runs to re-learn my car (tires, blueprinting, ignition, pullleys, differential, ram air) I ran almost everyrun at 180-190 degrees, my best actually coming at 190 degrees... having a manual fan switch helps keep the car cool while waiting to get staged.

Stock everything, 16.5 avg
ice, 16.3 (no real use for a TBI, no ice on TPI gave 16.8)
tire pressure, 16.0
timing to 6 advanced, 15.8

Things I noted, the tcc lock was useless. It works great for increasing city mileage but did nothing on the track (1800 rpm stall for my tc). I had consistent 2.2 60 ft times.

So how's this for a TBI, a 30 mpg highway stock TBI that does stock TPI times? All I did was give it the same supporting components like a TPI gets...

ouch.. if you do get them out.. don't let them put you to sleep... too many ppl I know went to sleep and came out looking like some beat the crap outta them. I got mine pulled when I was 14 and I stayed awake for the whole procedure, just local anestetic etc no gas. I was fine in a day, just had to lay off the strenuous activity.

As for this coming challenge, I'm not sure if I'll make it depends on how things are going this week, if it looks good I may come down to watch maybe. E-town is a good drive from where I am.

well, it was interesting to say the least.
blackbird305, we did not get teh convertor swap done do to some family obligations that took away the night we had planned to do it. we did get teh !cat installed though and it worked out pretty good. car has a firmer tone and ran very well in the heat. randy ran in the 15.3's most of the day and the in eliminations suddenly went a 15.07. he was a long way out on his opponent and lifted around the 1000' mark, which means tha tmay have been a 14sec pass. we'll just have to wait to anothe rday to see it for real.
my cav didn't make it. it is leaking oil at a record pace. i guess it is finally time to fix that leaky valve cover i have been ignoring fo rhte past 3 years
deatrend had a good day too. he had a bit of trouble launching and fell victim to the track suddenly coming around in the first round of eliminations. he ran 15.6's in time trials and then went a 15.4 th efirst round.
people going way under their dial in tiem was the story of the first round of elims. they cleaned and redressed teh track and it picked up a ton. caught a lot of people out.

that is all for now. hopefully we can get the converotr in blackbird305 and get him back to the track very soon. and if deadtrend does a bit of suspension work maybe he can get down into the low 15's too, he already has the mph to do it.

wish i could've made it. Cool to see you guys making decent runs donn the 1/4 mi.

I installed the ac delete pulley along wiht a new auto tensioner, tweaked the timing a little bit (now at 12 deg), and finally cleaned and lubed my throttle cable so it doesnt get stuck at 3/4 WOT, all in preperation for coming to the track and i just plain old overslept. Oh well, maybe next time. Did make a virtual run against my laptop to see what i might have done. Est. ET of 14.87 @ 87mph. Hopefully one of these days ill get around to prom burning and fix my lack of fuel above 4000 RPMs and get rid of my pegleg and maybe i can see if i can dip into the mid 14's at the track.
