open element, ram air?
open element, ram air?
ne one have some custom open element ram air systems set up? i am interested in doing this pics owuld be awesome. i did a search but i either come up with threads about open element or ram air never together. Thanks for your help!
I don't know that you can get both together. With open element you have a filter open on all sides. With ram air you are directing the air into the air cleaner with hoses ect. I think at that point you don't have open element anymore.

Hey deadtrend. I was think about that also. What kind of difference, if any, did you feel in power/torque with the open element, and ram air hood package? Just wondering if it's worth the $$$.

I just built a cold air intake that ducts cold air from under the car and into the open element...I can take pics of that if you want...

thats the ducting...I also took the thermac stuff out of the stock aircleaner along with the air silencer ring to improve airflow. If you do remove that stuff, be sure to cover it up

Nice pics and good job!
I've been toying an idea similar to your's only instead of coming from underneath the gfx. I have a z28 grill and have been thinking about routing one side up over the radiator and to the tbi. My engine stays plenty cool (sometimes it stays too cool and never warms up to 160-which means I run way rich
).
My only question is: say you have a tight seal-what does your engine do with all the extra air?

Hey if you try that idea and seal the aircleaner, make sure you have more then a 3 inch tube going to the tbi, and also make sure there arent many twists in the tube, or else it will hurt performance!
The ecm can deal with slightly higher pressure cause by a ram air setup at high speeds. It takes it a week or so to learn how to, but it usually does :P

Pretty soon my ecm is going to blow!
I hate disconnecting the battery as it is now....takes some driving time before it compensates for my mods. I need to start burning chips real soon.
Anyways, I've removed the rubber piece in front of the radiator as well as the plastic piece above that. I'm thinking of using 4" duct with the only bend going over the radiator. Of course that piece will have to be flattened in an oval form to fit under the hood. Then from there I plan on routing that to a 10" closed off air cleaner with something like an 8" aircleaner-not to unlike someone else on this board that did a ram air mod a few months back.

i would like to do that with my 89 rs, just get like a lenght of dryer vent hose long enough to go under the car and bolt in on like you did. I like it.
