LT1 vs. LT4 cam? Your thoughts

I am about to do a heads and cam swap but am undecided on cams. I know LT1 cams are easy to come by but I want a little more power. I know the LT4 is a bit more agressive but is still relativly tame. Scoggin Dickey sells an LT4 cam kit with lifters and some other jazz for about $275. That is reasonable. I plan on using the World Products S/R torquer 305 heads too, all of course running on a custom chip. My plan is a solid 300 HP which I think is achievable with the mods I already have. So will an LT4 cam be a good choice?

LT4 cam or LT4 hot cam? The LT1 cam and LT4 cam are nearly identical, but the hot cam is .525 lift, which seems a tad high for a 305. If I had to do it again I'd go with a ZZ4 cam.

I am talking about the production LT4 cam not the HOT cam. The HOT cam is waaaaay to much for a 305. The specs between the production LT1 and LT4 cams are similar but the LT4 should give a little more power.

The hot cam isn't that big, and it only has .525 lift if you install 1.6 rockers, I can't remember the specs for the lt4 cam right now, but I remember them being a little small for my liking. but the cam does have potential.

here are the specs on the LT4 production cam:
Dur. @.050" Lift w/ 1.6 rocker LSA
I: 203 .476" 115
E: 210 .480

I was thinking of installing this cam in the 330hp crate motor, since the vortec heads don't have EGR provisions and this cam, per GM, has enough overlap to perform a self EGR funtion. The LT4 vettes and camaros didn't come with an EGR valve and they pass emissions fine so I'm assuming the self-EGR works. I would probably lose a little HP due to the smaller duration compared to the cam that comes in the engine, but it should be very streetable and very computer friendly, not to mention able to pass emissions without any trouble. If I could get 300hp and 350lb-ft, that would be plenty for a daily driver, and still almost twice the HP I have now.

The LT4 cam is a peanut cam, I would go bigger than that if I was planning on moding a stock motor and not even changing anything else. GO bigger.

What I really want is a nice cam to complement the S/R Torquer heads yet remain chip friendly. I do not want a lumpy idle and I want about a 1000-5000 rpm range. I want it to be a low rpm street machine. I don't want a cam that has to be wound up to feel any power. Can anyone else recomend a good cam for these cars that isn't an LT1 or LT4. I mean for best street applications. I think the S/R torquer heads can support .560" lift.

My old cam (which I ran on a stock 350 tbi with headers) was a comp hi energy 268/276 with .464 lift on a 114 lobe sep. The cam made more bottom end power than my stock cam, but still pulled good to 5500 rpm. If you want chip freindly make sure you go 114 or more deg lobe sep.

Thanks man. Those are the things I need to know. I don't know squat about cam specs that allow for good tuning with TBI systems.
