cam

Ok, been planning on not modding the 305 but building a 350. Now it's looking like may be quite a while before I can do the 350 but I already have a cam and intake, so...
How would this cam do in the 305 (only got 75,xxx miles) with ported 305tpi heads tbi intake opened to 2 inch bores with 670 tbi, full exhaust and custom chip?
I'd really like the 350 but I'm starting to think about putting this stuff in the 305 then building a badass 350 with a stealthram or something after I finish the rest of the car(paint, hood, interior, etc.)

Later, Mike

Duh, I bet cam specs would help a little for this question.
215/218 dur 489/503 lift and 115 lobe sep

Sounds Like the ticket!! Are you goin to keep the stock valve springs?? I'm going with much the same ste up only I am going to use 1.6 RR, My cam however isn't as aggressive.

you will have to do more than change the springs

at .503 lift you will need to have the valve guids machined to accept that much lift. springs are a must, you would probably want to go to a 1.5" springs, and have the spring pockets opened up to accomidate, but there are 1.25" springs that do take that much lift and have the correct spring pressure.

So if I got some tpi heads ported, proper springs would this cam work well in a 305? Or should I hold out and build a 350(may be a long time before the 350)?

Also how much lift can I use, would it be to much with 1.6rr?

if you can due customer computer work, that would be an OK cam, i am going to be running similar specs (less intake, more exaust and about he same lift) but i plan on doing alot of computer work.

anything over .480 you need to have at least the valve guids machined, so running that cam with 1.6rr's should be ok, just make sure you know how much lift you need them to machine for when you head to the shop. because with that cam and 1.6rr's you will be running about .537 lift also, i would talk to to cam manufacture and find out what springs you need, you need to get the right spring pressure, and and make sure that the springs aren't going to bind.

you are also going to need screw in studs, that much lift will yank the press in's right out of the head (just saw this happen this weekend on my good friends IROC, and he only had .480 lift) and let me tell you, tapping the heads for screw in studs while the heads are on the car, is not alot of fun.

So for this cam what would be the best choice, preping the tpi heads or getting new World 305torquer heads and porting those?Money is key to this answer$$$$?

well that is really up to you, the head TPI heads aren't bad when ported, of course aftermarkets are going to be better, but more money.

it shouldn't be very much money to have the spring pockets, valve guids, and screw in studs done. and then if you do the porting yourself, that will be the cheaper than buying aftermarket heads.

MIke,

Got a set of #416 heads. Talked to my machine shop guy yesterday, three angle valve job, open valve seats up to accept bigger valves was a total of 185.00. I will do the prot and polixh myself and then the 1.6 RR will run me aroundd 200.-225.
So for about somewhere around 450. I will have a set of heads that will flow very well. Sitting Bull has sposted flow # on these heads that are close to a set of vortech heads which are the next best thing.

Just my .02 worth.

the TPI heads should be fine, they are just about as good as the 416's and they are centerbolt style. but if you are going to be going to a 4bbl intake, the 416's are the way to go.
