Aircleaner ?s
In the Tech Articles section of this site, the first Utimate TBI article mentions a Mr. Gasket non-drop air cleaner. Is that an open element element, or is it a complete airbox?
Also, would it help anything to move the intake air temp. sensor to a cooler place, or would that just jack with the computer?
Finaly, whats the tallest aircleaner that K&N makes, 'cause if I get the drop airbox and put a truck lid on it, theres gonna be like 4" of clearance?
Thanx.

i used a drop base air cleaner assembly....works good, also took off that stupid metal ring that the factory assembly sits on...
get a drop base 14 inch assembly, and a 3 inch tall k&n air cleaner.
get the xtreme air lid from K&N.
you can just lay the intake air sensor where ever , just make sure you hook it back up or you will get a ses light

You want to get a NON drop base air cleaner. Also, if you get a drop base and remove the gold ring you run the risk of contacting the coil which is a BIG nono. I would second ths x-stream filter top though just for the looks alone. Maybe a very slight gain too.

i dont recall who, but yes someone makes a plastic "ram air" non drop plastic air box that would work... i see it in the back of car mags all the time. look in the back of HotRod or Car Craft....... its one of the smaller B&W ads...
as for the drop/non drop thing doesnt matter much, makes a huge diff anyway.
with a drop base, i measured about 4.20" of clearance between the sealling part of the drop base and the underside of the hood... take away a 1/2" for the stud, aircleaner nut and thetop and you can fit about 3.5" of air cleaner (i have a 3") and you should still have more then enough room for the engine to shift without it hitting the hood..

Allright. Thank you. I've already decided agaisnt a new box and started cuttin up the stock one becuse I figured the drop wouldnt matter a whole lot either.
But, I still have a couple questions. First, would the metal, flexable dryer hose look cheep and retarded (it's all gonna be painted flat black to look stock)? Also, which would flow better, a 3" filter in the box, or one of the big, cone fliters on the end of the piping?

Whats the min. diameter i should use for the inlet pipe? Everything I've seen has a 3" pipe, but I have a great idea if a 2" pipe will work. I shoudln't need too big of one, I mean, even after headers, Edelbrock intake, cai, ultimate TBI, chip, ignition stuff, pullys, chip, and timing, all of that, the pice of crap is gonna be good to push 200hp throgh the crank (but i still love her), right?
thatll be more than 200 hp, and id use 3 if you could, smaller means less air flow...i mean your car is basically pulling and pushing air through straws as it is, lets try to pull in and push out as much air as possible.

what the heck makes you say that!?
if he has a L03 (im assuming he does), and the only mods mentioned in this thread are a air cleaner intake..
granted, there are several people who report a better azz dyno feel after doing the aircleaner mod, ( i cant say anything since i did several things to my car at the same time.. but it was faster when i was done)
but 200hp? not gonna happen.
my car dynoed at 152RWHP... counting that back to the crank, i make about 190hp. not too far from 200, but he isnt going to get the crabtacular L03 to pull 200hp by swapping the air cleaner.
if hes otherwise stock and hasnt done a tuneup recently, i would guess that hes making even less then the rated 170 at the crank

Well, I said above that I'm puttin' on "headers, Edelbrock intake, cai, ultimate TBI, chip, ignition stuff, pullys, chip, and timing, all of that".. And she actualy jsut got a tune up last oil change, I put on some MSD 8.5mm wires, and a high performance cap and rotor (which I dont realy is better than normal), and its definitly back to the 170hp, or real close. I'm assumin its an L03, thats the only TBI engine they made right?
Anyway, does the stock flexible hose cause restriction? It's pretty big and just what I need to connect the 3" pipe w/ the box.

I can't remember exactly who it was, but there was some guy on here who actually did dyno his 305 tbi with the stock snorkel and with an open element and he gained 10 rwhp with the open element. Granted this is on a dyno with the hood open and air blowing on it, but it still made a pretty big difference.
hey im no fool, i know JUST an open air element wont add 30 hp....i thought he said what will he have AFTER the intake, headers, yadda yadda....and when i said circular is better, i am assuming he ment he wanted to use some sort of pipe/tubing to extend the snorkle , put on a cone air filter, and ditch the air filter in the air cleaner assembly, ...that is what i gathered,
