EMISSIONS open air cleaner...

OK, I've been thinking about all the fun different ways I could make ram air for this bad-*** slow car....and in the end I realized that I honestly need to get a TPI or an LT1...TBI in the end is really just not worth it anymore....

Anyway the point is that I finally gave in and decided I should get an open element air cleaner whilst I wait for all the moolah to fall in my lap...

The question being:

Autozone, Discount(Advance) Auto Parts, and Pep Boys are the closest places to me.

What would be the best, cheapest Open element air cleaner I could get?

What would it take for me to make it hook up to the stock emissions stuff?(detailed please, detailed)

pics would be beautiful.

Thanks a bunch.

umm why do you need "ram air", which really does nothing, so in reality all it would be is cold air. Either way, why do you feel you absolutely have to have one? The open element will be just fine. Read the tech article to find out how to put one on.

Cmon now, dont "dis" on tbi when you havent even gotten yours to run even halfway right.
18 seconds? wtf!? when was the last time you gave it a tuneup! How about checked the dipstick even!

Figure out what is horrendously wrong with your car before you go trying to mod it. For all you know you are firing on 4 cyls.

I was thinking the exact same thing! I suggest a tune up before you do any mods, lol. Reminds me of a friend I had in highschool. He had an 89 formula 350. Thought it was so fast until he lost to another guy in a v6 firebird. Come to find out he hasn't even changed the oil in 3 years, let alone the air cleaner, plugs, etc but guess what he just got?. Lol, headers. He thinks headers are more inportant than maintanance. Pablo made a very good point. Fix what's wrong with the car before you try to mod it.

Fret not.

You misunderstand my resolve.

I've FINALLY found out why my car is running so bad times...other then the obvious....

Bad TPS and old fuel filter.

As for Tuneup...did one about 4000 miles ago(or about 4 months) and I'm getting ready to do another.

First of all, the last tuneup I did, I got synthetic oil, Platinum +4's(don't get me started), bosche wires, mallory brass inserts cap and rotor, and mobil1 synthetic fuel filter, (and fram air filter)...

When we did the tuneup it turned out I had 3 broken spark plugs...

after we were done, low and behold...no power increase.

I don't mind though, its good enough for street driveability as-is(once I fix the problems).

But I want fast, and the more I go through what I want to get(which I've been going through for about a year now) it just seems to end up costing about as much as it would to put a TPI or LT1 in the car...and both have more potential then my old lo3 305. Especially the LT1, I'd really like that, good emissions, great potential, great gas mileage(considering the awsome v-8-ness of it)...it would be nice.

Did I mention that I have yet to get better then 15 mpg around town? thats HORRIBLE with o.d. tranny and such a low rearend.

Anyway, could someone put up a link to the article of which you speak?

Thanks.

<a href="http://64.4.20.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=d08b4c67ef85a6dbecef0c15a074c61c&lat=1064984422&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2ethirdgen%2eorg%2ftechbb2%2fshowthread%2ephp%3fthreadid%3d201897%26goto%3dnewpost">This is a thread about what happened</a>

25thrss you left a message in it....but I can understand if you don't remember, you have a lot of friggin posts.

That also goes into further detail about my tuneup too I believe. It's kinda funny really...well not really....

It won't let me see the thread, but you are right, I don't remember it. I wasn't making fun of you or anything. It just reminded me of my idiot friend a while back. Sorry for ranting. My fault. I guess then you should look into fixing what you know is wrong before you get an open element, but that's just me.

<a href="https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/showthread.php?threadid=201897">sry here</a>

I know what the problems are...or at least I'm close...

I also think there may be something wrong with the o2 sensor, but I'm not sure...and it may not be the TPS, it could the electrical connection connecting to it...but like I said, I'm close.

I still want an open element air cleaner.

That doesn't mean I'm getting it tomarrow, and that I need an answer tonight or anyhting....but I plan to get one as my first "mod" though it can hardly be considered one.

Anyway, I really need an article with pix as to how to go about doing this. I also need the drill bit sizes if I need to do some drilling...

Thanks again.

I remember that now. I still stand by what I said too. Good luck with fixing it.

if you haven't changed o2 sensors in the last 30k miles, DO IT, and use a GM sensor, not a generic auto parts store one.

they bosche and other auto store ones, tend to not be as acurate as the GM ones are. but brand new it should be good enough to not make your car run THAT bad.

In theory, nothing on my car should make it run that bad....but thats always been me(and my cars apparently), go against the normal logic.

have you tried doing a compression check, also verify that you are getting spark to all 8 cyl.

No, but that does seem to be worth a try.

I do believe I have a vaccum leak too, I need to look for it.

Wow, old used cars suck sometimes...
