Problems after hedder install

Hey all, I just recently installed a set of hedders and i also removed all of my smog equipment. Anyways it just doenst seem like its running right now. I went to the muffler shop for a new Y-pipe, they put a 2 3/4 inch Y-pipe on it. They cut back about 16 inches into my 3" tailpipe ( why i dont know ). I dont know if that has anything to do woth it or not. I have a stage 2 chip, says to run it with full exhaust including hedders, Should i use it?
Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Why in the hell did they use a 2 and 3/4 y-pipe? That deifies logic. All of your exhaust restriction is still there, just not as bad as stock. Since you paid for a custom y-pipe I would take it back and ask for a 3 in

Well you know, thats a damn good question. I dropped the car off so i didnt get to see him do it. But i just assumed, The hedders has 3 inch collectors, and the other end is also 3 inches, Why would you put anything else besides 3 inches there? Do you think that could be my problem?

well I am not sure your description is vague on symptoms. I would think that you shouldnt have any performance losses do you have an o2 sensor. The only thing I could thing of is a exhaust leak. Can you here any ticking? Is it running hot? I would do a search on the baords here. There is wealth of info on header install and problems. I would still take it back for a 3"y-pipe. The 2 3/4 is just choking that 305. Did you do any head porting?

Come on guys, why would you think that a 2 3/4" y-pipe would be a restriction on a 305 when that is the exact same size the factory use on the 350 IROC's possibly smaller on the twin cat Z's. I don't belive that is his problem. He's probably experiancing a loss of low end torque due to LESS back pressure. A little expirementing with fuel pressure would help offset the loss.

Yeah and the factory never uses inferior restrictive parts too. I dont think the y-pipe is the problem. I agree its most likely a tuning issue. Chances are its running leaner than with manifolds

Yeah there is a ticking noise, i thought i was an exhaust leak so i took i back to the shop. They looked at it and said that there wasnt any leak, that thats probably the sound the hedders make. Oh and yeah it does runn hot now, i have to run my fan almost constantly.

Can you smell fuel? Headers dont make a ticking noise a ticking noise is a sign of a exhaust leak. Its running hot probably cause its lean. Do you get a ping on excelleration? What do you have for induction? My guess is its FI It could be running lean cause of the extra air being sucked back into the header or collector gasket. At night you might see them glow

No i dont think i can smell a gas smell, but of course its getting cold out so i keep my windows up. Its a TBI and ive got a open element on it, and as far as the leak, What will i see glow?
As far as the exhaust, there is enough clearance for 3 inch Y-pipe, right? With those hedders, the collectors are all the way to the bottom of the engine. thanks for the help!

Where is the o2 sensor mounted? If it is too far from the original location you maynot be getting it up to operating temp. You may need a three wire heated o2 sensor.

you're not going to see it glow around a leak, you will see black spots surrounding the leak but not the location itself actually glowing. the header itself could be glowing though due to the fact that you now have a free flowing exhaust on it and could be dumping some unburned air/fuel mixture into your headers and it's igniting due to heat.

the carbon build up could be from an overly rich air fuel mixture, or maybe your spark plugs arent at the right temperature range for your engine. or maybe you just idle around to much never getting your spark plug temps. hot enough to burn deposits off of them. then again your ignition system could just be getting weak.
