Lost my keys....what are my options?
I lost my keys at work on a 275 acre ranch. What is my best option for dealing with that situation? I was thinking buying a chip with vats deleted and getting new ignition cylinder and a new set of keys. Thanks for any help.

Why do you only have 1 set of keys?
Maybie a dealer could get you a new set, maybie you can get lucky and find a spare key under the carpeting as a couple people have
You don't have the knockouts from the original keys with the keycodes on them do you, a locksmith may be able to use those to make you a new key.
Well first you should have more than one set of keys.
A dealer might be able to get you a new key using the VIN number, doubtfull though. Maybie you can find a spare key under the carpet like a couple people on here have.
I would think thats pretty much your only option, getting a new cylender and disabling the vats unless someone else has an idea.
Maybie you could install a pushbutton start that doesn't use a key, because that wouldn't make it easy to steal

I think after 1988 you can go to most locksmiths and give them the vin and they can get the cut codes. If you still have the knock outs from your keys with the 4 letter/digit code, Use that.

Really? The locksmith around here told me that he couldn't make a new key for the ignition or the doors in my 91 without the codes or an original key.

It took something like 7 keys before the locksmith got the right key for her car. The turn was no problem and the cut was no problem... it was the code that was the problem. Be sure you know your code number too. If you do, you're fine. If not, it is hit and miss with the locksmith.

Go to the dealer. Give him your VIN. GM will fax him the key codes and vats codes for your car. You will need to give him proof that the car is yours (registration, title, etc.) because if he cut a key for every person with a vin number, he would get sued by the people getting their car stolen. Dealer can cut a key in 5 min. I know I have had it done for my 88 Formula.
If the ignition lock and door locks are factory...no problem. If they have been changed some time in the cars past.....only choice is to replace locks with new ones off the shelf.

Stupid lieing locksmith, everyone around here is out to try and rip you off
I know its everywhere but we just have an overabundance of people who try and rip you off here.
My father paid $2500 to put a tranny in his minivan, I think that was rediculous.

At the lock shop I worked at, We had a 800 number to call with the vin. They then gave us the codes for the keys. We then looked up the codes in our book for the cut depths. The only thing I can't remember is if they gave us the vats #.

i went to the GM dealer and got a key for $25 one day when I broke my key. I didn't have my old key or anything, I just wrote down my VIN and brought it to them...
