When I was doing this, smoke was also coming out of the passenger valve cover breather. Is that Ok? I'm guessing it must be getting into the crankcase from blow-by? The car did smoke out of the tail pipe, but I thought it would look black cause of burning the carbon, but it was blue. That would tell me it is oil. But I guess that could be because I sucked the stuff up in the PVC line, and oil was probably in there from the PVC line.
blue = oil
white = coolant
black = unburned gasoline

*AOL voice* Welcome! You've got blowby!
now you have a great excuse to get new heads!

you're getting oil through your valve seals

for the smoke coming out the breather, i can only think of two ideas.

1. the worn ring/blowby idea you already have

or 2, a intake manifold leak that lets it get into the crankcase.... you could just have bad intake gaskets....
also if it was leaking into the lifter valley that would also suck up some oil mist.. and that would cause excessive carbon build up... and that would cause you to need the top end cleaner.. (and see a big effect).

btw, you can save your money on the stuff.... water works just as well.

You have to mist it is with a spray bottle. Just a squirt here and there and the it will vaporize in your chamber and sorta 'steam clean' it. I have never tried it but it seems like it would work. Spray 1 squirt into your TBI unit and see what happens. More squirts may be needed.

I thought it was perfectly normal for fumes to be coming out of a breather. Isn't that what it's supposed to do, ventilate the crank case?

I work at a buick dealership and we use the GM top engine cleaner on a regular basis. All the buicks we do always have a blue-ish smoke from the tailpipe till all the cleaner is burned out. When I used it on my 83 ta it smoked the exact same way. I do not know about your smoke from the breather but I think the blue smoke after the cleaner is applied is okay.

the way i started doing it was to take a plastic fast food cup and punch a small hole in the bottom... well bottom side really.

then i take off the air cleaner and start the car... i put my thumb over the hole and hold the cup with one hand.... while i give it a lil gas with the other... i then take my thumb off and let it pour into the TBI.

no chance of pouring it in too much that way, but if you stall the engine, STOP and dont keep pouring water in.

misting seems to work, but after i was told to try to pour more in by another board member, i found that it worked ALOT better.

could i be positive? no. i could take alot of guesses though.

Which do you say is better, water or the Gm top end cleaner?
i would say they clean the same, but im only looking at the removal of carbon deposits... if the GM cleaner does somthing else, then i donno. i dont have a way to do a side by side comparison of how effective each one is.

however, i dont feel the need to change my oil after doing the water trick.. i mean, even if the water got into the crankcase, its water.. and the hot oil would cause the water to turn into steam evaporate anyway, so no harm done... looking at the benifits : no oil change, gets carbon off and its free.. its jsut the choice i make.. i cant really put the top end cleaner down since ive only used it once...
