Need help selecting cam
I am getting ready to buy an aftermarket cam. But i am having a hard time choosing one because i dont know a whole lot about them. Basically what im wanting to do is improve my top end power and some bottom end also. I was going to just buy an LT1 cam which i may still do but ive been looking at some others and heres what i found:
Dur 214/224 Lift 442/265 LS 112
Dur 224/224 Lift 465/465 LS 114
Dur 224/234 Lift 465/488 LS 114
Dur 234/234 Lift 488/488 LS 114
Which one of these will be best for my setup? My engine is stock LO3. Im keeping my stock heads for the momment, maybe eventually swap heads but im not sure yet.

I don't know much about them either but I can tell you that I went the an '87 L98 cam and I wish I had gone with something bigger.
If your going to stick with the stock heads for now, make sure they can handle your selection. From what I have read on here the stock springs can't handle too much.
If I had it to do over again, I would go with the LT1 cam. Or something similar.

I can't remember maybe some one can help me out but I think you might need new springs with an LT1 cam. But maybe that's only if you combine that with 1.6 rockers. Can't remember.

All those cams are too large in my opinion. You're going to need to be able to tune proficiently to get those tuned in for one thing and with stock heads, those cams are going to come alive when your heads can't flow anymore.
Look at an LT1 cam for now, those cams are not similar specs. But, you need to make sure you know how to tune the prom first and then worry about a cam swap otherwise you'll be very disappointed. I've seen it with my own eyes.

I would agree, something in the 206 or so intake range would be a nice fit. the smallest of those is 214, they are all too large for a relativly stock L03. And do expect a significant ammount of tuning, even with a small cam, like an LT1 or a grind in the 204-206 range from one of the major manufactors.

None of them are that large. The one to get is the 96 cam. I beleive that is as large as the come from the factory.
What are the specs on a stock LO3 cam?

azvolfan is right youll need new springs, and i would add 1.6 rockers and replace the timing chain while your at it.
if your going with comp cam or a manuf other than an lt1 cam then look into getting one of their kits. i know that a CC kit with chain, springs, and cam is around $200-250. That way everything matches nicely.
btw LO3 specs are .050" tappet lift intake/exhaust is 179/194. maximum lift with 1.5 rockers is .350/.384
