Which ecm for a novice??

hey guys. Ive had tunerpro-rt and winaldl for almost a year. ive spent alott of time looking at various posts in here and this spring i want to jump into chip tuning on my 92 l03.
the motor is not staying in the car permanantly but it is going to stay for the summer. if i grenade it on a bad tune im not too worried.
i'de really like to use the prominator to accomplish the tuning however as i see the stock l03 ecm to be inferior im picking up a newer ecm.
The question is, should i go with the p4's you guys have been picking apart or are they beyond a novice tuners ability, if so would an older ecm work better in my case? or have you guys hacked the p4's enough that i could get it to work with a minimal learning curve.
id like to get my feet wet in the summer and then a motor swap should be in the works for next winter while she's parked, i plan on retaining the tbi. thanks alott

I would go for a P4, running a TBI with a Mass Air Flow sensor. I am hitting the yards for my TBI bonnet and GM MAF in the morning.

The P4s come in 1993-1995 Chevy Trucks, Tahoes/Yukon, and Suburbans. They are also used in 1993-1996 Fullsize vans. Another use is the CPI 4.3 in the S10, S10 Blazer/Jimmy, and the Astro/Safari. The P4 was also used with the MPFI 2.2 in the S10s.

I would stick with a factory V8 ecm to make life more simple.

Many more features than other TBI ecms, including 8192 baud rate.

No, they are still not that advanced. But one COULD swap to a 4L60E and control their transmission electronically, like I have done. I have been controlling my shifts with a piggy backed PCM for some time, then I moved completely over to the PCM. I am going to run the EBL with the new 3.1 TBI that I am dropping in when I get time. They are forcasting rain this afternoon and tommorrow, so that time has not come yet.

hmm so there's no way to stay with the 700 tranny while going to the "erase and then reprogram" type of chip ?

You CAN convert a stock TBI ecm to "FLASH" chips to erase and reprogram them. The catch is you have to remove them from the ECM and put them in a Moates Burn 1 or similar to reflash them.

by running a maf would i be using it as data like a WB o2 or does it actually influence the ecm's tables as part of a hybrid MAF/SD setup? i have no experiance with MAF whatsoever. I believe my ecm allready has a tune in it as we suspect it to have been cammed and it runs too well to have been modded and not tuned (stock engine wit possible cam runs a 15.7 1/4) so i will be diggin myself out of a tuning hole i suspect(using a stock tune as a starting point).
So the p4 has been hac'd completely? i was reading that post on (its time to update) installing a p4 and it sounded like they hadnt figured it all out yet.
ide like to do the ecm/pcm swap this winter so i can be driving the car more then working on it.
i have a dual snorkel air cleaner would i have to run two maf's?. i've stared at the tables for my car in tunerpro alott and the p4 seems to eliminate alott of older features like low res spark/load/rpm tables but add alott of issues with passkey and such, is it worth it?
