NonDrop base air cleaners?

If I got one instead of my 14x3 drop base, and took out the aircleaner spacer ring. I could stack another air filter on top of the one I already got, and have another 80+ square inches of air flow right?

Advantage? or big freakin deal?

Assume I dont have a stock 305, just for arguements sake, say I have beast motor.

More air = Better? or will i disrupt flow by etc..

My intake is my first step to making power, I know gears are great...etc.. but Im not asking about other stuff.

I just want to know, in the long run, should I maximize/increase my air cleaner area. Or is my 14x3 K&N already capable of flowing more than enough to my 454 tbi. Assuming the engine was pulling as much air as the tbi could flow, 670 whatever...

Bottom line, what does a 14x3 k&n flow and how much flow would I gain by stacking another 2 inches of aircleaner on top of it.

Beats me, but I don't think it could hurt u know? Seems like a little more air flow wouldn't hurt nothing and maybe even help. Hey, has anyone seen those extreme air lids by K&N now? Where the lid itself is a filter? Now that is a neat idea.

switching out the drop base and spacer ring for a non drop base and no spacer ring won't change the height. I have a flat base k&n 14x3 air cleaner(no ****ty spacer ring). It was a generic PAW 14x2-1/8 crome one with paper filter for $17. I finally got the k&n last month. I needed a longer stud from PAW too. it all fits under the formula hood and gets nice cold air from the hood being opend. I want to make a sheetmetal pan to seal it. I have about 1/2" to 1/4 inch before I hit the hood so If I want to put in a TBI spacer or change the intake I might have to go for a different filter. I think I can get another 1/4 out if I changed my lid. I noticed the PAW is a little taller than my friends(he kept his stock wingnut stud).

Well, Pablo, if i drop the base 2 inches, which is about what the spacer ring is, the TOP lid wont change in height at all, if i add a filter that is the same height as the spacer ring, understand now?
Even so, Im more than sure I could make a new stud, or something that worked.

But still, what does a 14x3 k&n flow. does it flow more than 670cfm already, which would be the supposed max flow rate of my tbi, making more filter area worthless, or does it flow less than that, making another 2 inches of filter flow, closer to unrestricted.

well I had a 2-1/8 tall paper filter before and the 3" tall K&N made a noticeable difference. Both should flow more than my stock TBI needs but there still was an improvement.

on what kind of intake? what car you have? RS? I was trying to explanin that your filter should be in the same location with the flat based air cleaner. because the distance yours drops down(in the center not the outer edge) is countered with the spacer ring. a non drop base one will REALLY unshroud your TBI.

Shrouding is bad. thats why when somone passes out they tell everyone to stay back. if you form a tight circle aound that person then there is a lot less fresh air to breathe. Also when people talk about combustion chambers you try to unshround the valves by countouring the walls of the combustion chamber so air doesnt need to make a 90* turn down when the valve opens.

he he, so unshrouding, would be backing up those people, so that instead of having a 6" inch tight group that air cant get through you have a loose 14" group of people that air can get through.
hey i get it now.
