Vortec Heads

If I get a set of Vortec heads, would I need a special intake?? Second, they are 64cc, I am building a 350, would I want 64cc??

yeah you need a special intake, no question about that. i used the edelbrock performer vortec intake and it worked good for me.

they should be 64cc as far as i know. i know mine are. unless they were milled or anything, they will be 64cc.

with a 350, 64cc heads will give you a 9.1:1 compression ratio, which is pretty good.

any questions about tne intake or anything, let me know. or check out my website in my signature. there is some info on there.

What type of compression do you want with a 383 stroker?? Will vortecs work with a 383??

I'd shoot for right around 10:1 (no less than 9.5, no more than 10.5). Yeah, they'll work with a 383. The compression here will depend most on what pistons (dish, dome, or flat) you choose for the build-up.

2 valve-relief flattops (-5cc) w/ a Fel-Pro .038 gasket will yield 11.1 : 1. I just built an engine with this combo. If this were going to be a "driver" I would use either 4 valve relief flattops or .060 head gasket with 2 valve relief flattops - if they were aluminum heads, I wouldn't worry much about the 11:1, but with the cast iron Vortecs, I'd try to stay around 10-10.5 max w/ at least 93 octane as higher comp ratio will be prone to detonation.

You can check out Jim Pace perfomance parts for Vortec heads that hiave been drilled for the standard Intake pattern. they are extra but not too bad. I think it's 484.00 for the set ASSEMBLED. I think the springs are good to .500 lift too!!! A general rule is that you lose 1cc for every .004-.005 you mill of the head. Just a little info for you pocket book . Oh by the way vortec specific intakes are usually around 200 bucks

later,
Lars

someone had said earlier that the drilled heads dont bolt up very straight to standard intakes, something about the ports being off. Id stay with the vortec specific intake.

I have a 1982 Camaro with the drilled and tapped vortec heads. I am using the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap manifold. I had no problem lining things up.

Thanks,

Justin

I checked out your site, thats an afermarket rad, right?? Did you need the Rad for the 383 or you just decided to replace it?

The radiator is a custom aluminum radiator, with two large electric fans. It keeps the engine running cool along with my Sanderson Cast Iron headers.

The ports line up just fine. If you use the Vortecs on a 305 you have ti mill them then you have to use a specil adapter between the intakeand heads justbecasue of the gap. But other than that there is no difference between the ports.

Lars
