i got eatin tonight by a primer gray `85 stang.
interstate, he had high end power. i didnt. boo hoo. i want a twin turbo ls1 now. i hate getting beat.
sleepers. damn. pitty me. im about to be broke so this doesnt happen again any time soon.
been thinkin too. wouldnt a 305, because of its smaller crank be capable of revving higher safer than a 350? this is a hypothesis of mine. i am thinking 8k rpm with all the right/strongest stuff.??
ok, im blabbin. lata

usually if you see a car in primer around my way, then he has done engine work first and plans on making it look better later. So i guess it wasnt a smart move. did it sound good? Squeel wheels or anything like that?
um 305s have the same crank stroke as a 350. they cant rev any higher. Roller cams can't rev safely over 6500 without a hydra-rev kit.

305's and 350's do have the same crank. But smaller pistons with less mass and TBI that has super quick throttle response makes it rev faster (not higher) with the right cam and deep gears it is really fun.

so how are there guys out there with high reving small blocks? ya, i wasnt really racing, he was just showing off. i didnt even hit the gas all the way. he got beside me first. dropped the hammer and rocketed away, then slowed down and got next to me. i gave him the thumbs up, he thought it ment race, i meant nice fast ride. he took off again, i goosed it, and then he got next to me and shot me a peace sign and got off the exit. no tire spin, couldnt hear his exhaust my stereo was drowning out life itself as usual when im cruisin the interstate.

The high rpm motor thing came up a while ago... here is a basic recipe if I recall correctly. I want to state in advance I'm just trying to regurgitate info here to get the ball rolling and have not actually built one of these motors.
The old timers are very good at this kind of stuff because in the days before power adders, this is how they made big power. For a hot high revving 4-8000 rpm small block, look into a destroked 400... maybe with a 3" crank or aftermarket forged 350 crank. Think about something along the lines of a Victor JR and a big head, 215cc or larger with good mid lift flow. Keep your lift conservative to help the valve train live. Run a long rod with great rod bolts and high compression and keep the mass of the reciprocating assembly low. Use a 4-bolt block or better yet splayed mains. Tie it up with a custom 240+ degree @.050 cam, a 4.11 or steeper gear and to keep your top speed, a T56. Power band.... 4000-8000.
Next time you go to the track, look for someone who is running a N/A small block in the 10's... this is a guy you want to talk to.

what kind of engine combo do you have now? i believe that the 305 can easily go low 13's in a properly set up car. you just hafta match your parts and make it light. it may be able to run 12's, i'll be finding out this season.

RPMS come from short stroke, big bore motors (302, destroked 400, ect.) 305's have a long stroke and too small a bore to rev. Plus the fact that the small bore shrouds the *** outta the valves, valve size is too limited.
there are several reason high reving smallblocks(283, 302, 327) have fallen out of favor:
1. high reving engines need wild cams which is bad for gas and expecialy emissions.
2. wear is increased by reving so high
3. hydraulic roller cams cant rev as high to match
__a. solid roller cams can but need to be readjusted ever so often
__b. modern engines go much farther with less maintance
reason for big torque motors (350, 383, 400+)popularity:
1. torque makes big cars ('73+ f-body, chevelles, novas) move easier
2. you can take advantage of the added power of roller cams.
3. they don't need to rev high to make power which will give them long lives
4. torque is good for MPG
hmm thats it I think.

just go gonzo on the car and hack all the weight you can out of it. then just go to the track see what kind of mph you can run and figure what gear you need to run to put that speed right in thte sweet spot of the power band. matching components is always quicker than just buying more stuff.

im not trying to figure out how to get into the 12s with my lo3. k. what i was simply wondering about how the mechanics work with going high revving. it seems that ricers get pretty damn good milage with high reving engines. no torque true. but eventually i was thinking of how i would make a sbc sound like an older ferrari. or something like that. the high rev sound big power.
that and i though maybe if the 305 was a 305 because it had a smaller crank than it could rev high because of the physics of low centrifugal force trying to kill the crankshaft. anyway, i was just wondering.
well, idea dropped. thanks guys.
