Hello everybody. I have been on a wuest for over a year to try and get my car running. I have an 89 camaro rs. 305 Tbi engine. I have other posts on here of what I have done so far to get it running. Anyways, I got it running. It ran very rough. I also had to keep pumping the gas to keep it running. When I took my foot off the gas she died. I went to start it up again and my wife informed me that there was something spraying onto the engine. I stopped of course and realized it was gas. I pumped gas one more time so I could see it leak myself. The gas is leaking out of the sides of the TBI. There is some sort of plastic gasket in the throttle body top and bottom. I was wondering if this was something that could be replaced or if I had to replace the whole throttle body? Thank you for your time.

 

two options.

1)junkyard TBI= fast easy fix, the tbi unit is simple reliable and its a good bet a junkyard one will be fine, should be very cheap too.

2)Tbi rebuild kit= bout the same amount of time, you'll know its all good when you're done and you can get it through a dealership, dunno the price but prob more expensive then a junkyard piece.

the tbi is far simpler then a carb, i suggest a junkyard piece before you tear into your old one. tbi comes off easily, think it 3 bolts and the fuel lines and throttle cable and tv if you have an auto. you don't have to find an automatic or manual TBI the bracket on your will fit both, try to find the same year or near it though beciause of different TPS plug styles.

 

Thanks. I just have to find a junk yard now. Just for my knowledge is the tbi rebuild kit called a tbi kit? I found one online at autozone for about 30 dollars. I just don't know if this would have all that I need in it.

Thanks again. I found a kit on ebay for 30.00 dollars. I am the cause of this malfunction. I took the throttle body apart a while ago and played around with it a little. I was trying to get to the injectors. Translation = being retarded. Anyways, I broke the gasket and took it all out. I talked to a guy that I worked with and he said that it probably was not that important based on the material it was made of. That is where I went wrong. I listened to him. By the way he is a mustang driver. Thanks again for everything. I will be back.

 

Ok, So I ordered a gasket kit for my TBI unit. It is on its way to me now. My question is do I use any gasket sealant on it or not. I obviously have no clue. A guy that I work with says to put some RTV on it. I want to do it the right way. Thanks again.

 

if the gasket is one that sits below the fuel pressure regulator, then you don't need anything special. Just put the gasket on and then put the regulator onto it. If it's another gasket I dunno.

 

RTV dissolves in gasoline, so that won't help out. I always put the gaskets on dry. The injector o-rings will need to be lubed with some oil. This way they will slide into the housing properly.

All of the screws on the injector pod should have blue Loctite on them (the removable stuff). Don't overtighten them. The kit should have instructions that cover the torque specs and loctite.
