rpm limit before KABOOM!! on our stock L03's
just curious, wont it shift with an auto at like 5, even if im dropped to first. ive got 108k miles on it. will it BOOM-CLANK if take it to 5k. im pretty sure its gona still be pullin to there, as long as the engine is hot.

Umm, I had mine in 1st and gunned it.. It will rev up to 5K. I know if you put a auto in 1st it will not shift.. and it'll shift from 1st to 2nd around 4500 in drive. I think the trany will fry before the engine does.. Why would you want to do it anyways?

Before i put my 355 in, i wanted to dog the hell out of my L03. I almost had it to 6,000 rpm but it stopped pulling, almost like it hit a rev limiter. when i finally let that poor thing go into 2nd it shot a cloud of black smokke out of the tail pipes. I dont think you can blow one of these engines up now. By the way, it had 125,000 miles on it when i did it. I say go ahead, see what it will take.

I had 170k on mine and it saw 5500 a few times! I think I could have pushed it past 6....dont know why I would though.

tas is right... dont let the redline fool you the rotating assembly is good for way more than that the redline just tells you where the engine is done at
Im running an Lo3 shortblock and ive seen 6500 before, my typical shiftpoint is about 5800...
ive seen jester take his past 6500 when he did the heads, cam, intake, and carb

I should say however, that going past 6000 regularly is asking for trouble though
and even so, unless you have a killer valvetrain, valve float usually comes on hard around 6500

lol I doubt it would do much good. I'm sure you'd be way past your peak power. the only reason I could see for reving that high is to avoid the dropoff when you shift to 2nd. assuming you have a 700R4 of course.

premature valve train wear......but you should be OK shifting at 5500. NO NEED TO DO SO! 5200 maybe

Newer versions of the 700R4 won't hold first gear, but these are the electronic 4L60E versions. We don't have to worry about this, thirdgens never got those.
When I did a dyno run on mine I had it run up to 5500 rpm. It put out a couple of puffs of smoke from flaoting the valves, but that was it. Also I once accidentally got in the wrong gate when downshifting on the freeway and ran it to about 6200 for a second. It screamed, blew smoke, but the moment I got it in the right gear it ran just fine. This was when the engine was at about 195k, and it's put another 20k on since then.
My 700R4 will shift into second if you leave it in first. A 400 will do the same thing. I seem to remember it shifting around 5500. its been awhile since ive done that though so im not sure about the shift point. The engine had quit pulling by the time it shifted. theres really no need to do it because if your racing and let it shift this way, your not going anywhere while the motor is screaming. ive got 160k on the motor and tranny. If ya really want to grenade your engine a brick on the pedal in park works wonders.

gunned tonight, in circle d.
and it went to slightly past 4500 and sounded sweet, pulled right into second, and felt good and firm when second took over and was back at about 2k i think with that low groan wanting more rpm again.
I was wondering, because i love the high reving sound, and if at all possible, this summer, i want the damn think rapped out as much as it can, when i can, because i dont car if it dies. i will just HAVE TO buy a new engine then (350). i should have heads on this summer, i was just worried about sending a piston thru the top of my hood at 6k rpm. sounds like a "no" there. great!!
Thanks for another success story and a well answered post on thirdgen tbi board. Give yourselves a pat on the back everybody.

lates If youve got modulator valve on your tranny you can change your shift points on your tranny by turning the screw inside the nipple on the valve. take the vacum hose off and use a tiny flat screwdriver

A 327 has a shorter stroke, so it will rev higher safely, but I think the 305 can rev a little over 6K(theoretically) without flying apart in the bottom end. However our top ends aren't that good.
The cam has a lot to do with where an engine makes power.
