92 RS smells like gas.

Hey all,
I have a friend who's 92 RS smells like gas inside the car after driving it awhile. So we got under the hood and went to open the aircleaner. We had a very hard time getting the lid off, which is strange considering that this car is extremely clean and there isn't bunch of road gunk under the hood. When we popped it off of there (finally), there was gas on the under side of the lid. Is this normal? My 92 RS doesn't do that. Any possible causes/ remedies? My friend seems to think that it is an issue with the charcol canister, but I really don't know where to start. Any ideas?

TIA,
Chris

My 305TBI firebird does the same thing. When i take of the lid there is gas on the top. Do you ahve an after market air cleaner? I have the open element K&N kit. it could be too much air i am Guessing? i don't really think it does much.

He might have leaky injectors too. take the air cleaner lid off and have someone get in the car and start it up and rev the engine. See what the injectors spray pattern does at idle and at high rpm's. Then come back and give us that info.
BTW: Get a towel and cover his coil and his dist. cap when u do this. If fuel is going to go everywhere, u don't want it near any possible spark.

It's a bone stock air cleaner with a K&N filter. Leaky injectors huh? How is this remedied? My RS does it too, but not as bad as his? Would running some injector cleaner through it help any? Just a thought.

THanks,
Chris Payne

Yeah, there really is no way to "fix" injectors. Once there broken, there broken. Check out Turbocity.com for new ones. They come flow matched too and u can send ur bad ones in for a core charge and get money back on the deal.

cbpldc,
I I were you i would look in the yellow pages or goto a gm dealership first to see if they will rebuild them for you, cause those babys are what like 60 dollars each? And you also need to buy the tb pod gasket set, and the fuel screens... Just a idea, i think the rebuild is like 35 dolalrs with the fuel screens and gaskets
